Rory McIlroy puts PGA Tour on red alert with latest comments
Four-time major champion Rory McIlroy, 35, has revealed exactly which PGA Tour events he plans to skip in 2025.
Rory McIlroy has revealed exactly which PGA Tour events he plans to skip in 2025.
McIlroy, 35, explained before the BMW PGA Championship in September that he wanted to dramatically reduce his playing schedule next year.
By playing the Abu Dhabi HSBC Championship this week, it represents his 26th event of the season.
He will also play the DP World Tour Championship before taking some time off for Christmas.
Going forward, McIlroy plans to play between 18-20 times a year.
In 2025, he told Telegraph Sport that he is thinking about skipping:
- The Cognizant Classic in the Palm Beaches
- The Valero Texas Open
- RBC Heritage
- FedEx St. Jude Championship
He told the paper: "There's a few tournaments that I played this year that I don't usually play and that I might not play next year.
"Like, I played the Cognizant (Classic) in Palm Beach Gardens (formerly the Honda Classic), San Antonio (Texas Open) and Hilton Head (RBC Heritage).
"And I'll probably not play the first playoff event in Memphis (the FedEx St. Jude). I mean, I finished basically dead last there this year (tied for 68th out of 70) and only moved down one spot in the playoff standings."
He added: "Well, at this point in my career ... Hey, I’m 35 and have been out here for 17, 18 years, so I'm just going to go to the places that I enjoy and where I play well.
"Look I've done the hard slog, I've done that sort of 25 to 30 events a year. And I'm not getting any younger."
Skipping the Cognizant Classic is not really a surprise, given its position in the schedule.
It is played in late February and would allow McIlroy more time to prepare for the coveted Players in the build-up to the majors.
But skipping the RBC Heritage at Hilton Head may raise a few eyebrows, given it is a signature event.
McIlroy usually tends to skip The Sentry every January and it would mean that in 2025 he would miss two out of eight signature events.
The Northern Irishman lobbied for the $20m tournaments alongside Tiger Woods at the height of the LIV Golf feud.
It was previously a stipulation that it was a requirement for golfers to play signature events if qualified.
McIlroy famously skipped the RBC Heritage in 2022 after a disastrous Masters performance, leading to a huge fine.
The stipulation has now been removed.
