Rory McIlroy lost for words after Bryson DeChambeau's brutal U.S. Open dagger
Rory McIlroy was left almost speechless after Bryson DeChambeau twisted the knife over what transpired at the 2024 U.S. Open.
Rory McIlroy was left almost speechless after Bryson DeChambeau twisted the knife about what transpired at the 2024 U.S. Open ahead of their exhibition.
McIlroy and DeChambeau are facing off tomorrow in Las Vegas at one of the most exclusive golf clubs in the United States.
The Crypto dot com Showdown also features World No.1 Scottie Scheffler and DeChambeau's fellow LIV recruit Brooks Koepka.
All the golfers were mic'd up on the range on 16 December ahead of the 18-hole contest.
McIlroy told the spectators that he was looking forward to getting revenge on the American over what happened at the U.S. Open in June.
You will likely remember how the Northern Irishman, 35, led by two strokes with five holes to play.
But he unfolded like a pack of cards down the stretch at Pinehurst No.2, missing par putts inside four feet on the 16th and 18th holes to surrender the lead.
DeChambeau rose to the occasion, making an improbable par from the fairway bunker at the 72nd hole in near darkness to land his second major title.
A crestfallen McIlroy watched the drama unfold from the scorer's hut.
He made a quick getaway, opting not to congratulate the American or talk to reporters.
A few weeks after the defeat, McIlroy insisted that his infamous Masters collapse in 2011 and being pipped by Cameron Smith at the landmark Open at St Andrews two years ago stung more.
"I'd like to try and get him back for what he did to me at the U.S. Open," McIlroy said.
DeChambeau then interjected: "To be fair, you kinda did it to yourself."
That prompted roars from the gallery.
Even the aforementioned Scheffler could be seen in the background cracking a smile.
"I don't really know where to go from there," McIlroy said.

The Showdown will air on TNT tomorrow evening at 7pm ET (11pm GMT).
The golfers are playing three different formats over 18 holes.
McIlroy told reporters in a news conference earlier in the week the contest was a gesture of goodwill to try and repair the damage done by the unprecedented disruption in the men's game since LIV's noisy introduction into the sport in June 2022.
Although he wasn't happy with one reporter's question.
