Rory McIlroy: "I'm not going to stand up here and complain"
Rory McIlroy says he was glad to finish off the Cognizant Classic on Sunday as it gave him the opportunity to play in a very special event.
Rory McIlroy says he was glad he got to finish his final round at the Cognizant Classic on Sunday as it meant he got to join his father for 'the most important day of his year'.
The PGA Tour event was forced into a Monday finish for the first time since 2015 after rain and wind battered PGA National.
A number of golf fans were furious at the planning from tournament officials, given the forecast.
McIlroy was also going to be annoyed if he had to play for the fifth day in a row and miss out on partnering his father Gerry at the uber-exclusive Seminole Pro-Member.
The annual tournament welcomes elite professionals, celebrities and billionaire businessmen.
Tiger Woods was scheduled to play in the event for the first time ever.
It will also be the first time he has played since withdrawing from the Genesis Invitational because of sickness.
Woods will play in the event alongside Seth Waugh, who is the chief executive of the PGA of America.
McIlroy told reporters he viewed the Cognizant Classic as 'a week that could have been' and it followed a trend of his previous starts in 2024.
The four-time major champion started off his year with a bang in the Middle East, winning the Dubai Desert Classic for a record fourth time.
That followed a near-miss at the inaugural Dubai Invitational when he hit a disastrous tee shot on the 72nd hole.
On the PGA Tour, McIlroy placed T-66 at the washed out AT&T Pebble beach Pro-Am and tied for 24th at Riviera.
This week McIlroy was once again imperious with his driving but there were still some misses with his irons.
He even suffered a bit of a meltdown in the water.
McIlroy ultimately carded a final round of 3-under 68 to finish on 10-under for the week.
Still, the delay meant he had a tight turnaround.
"I'm really happy I got done today because it means to join my dad in the most important day of his year tomorrow at Seminole," he said.
"I guess it's the life that I wanted. It's the life that I've asked for. I'm not going to stand up here and complain.
"This is what I want to do. I like being busy."
Asked how he handles his busy schedule, McIlroy added: "No one likes being me more than me, so that's sort of the attitude that I like to go with.
"I'm busy, but I like being busy when it's stuff that I want to do."
