Justin Rose given two-shot penalty after amateur hour mistake
England's Justin Rose has revealed he made an amateurish mistake during the first round of The Sentry on the PGA Tour in Kapalua.
Justin Rose has been there and done it.
The Englishman, now 43 years old, is playing his 25th season on Tour having turned professional in 1998.
Why we are making this point is because, even as a veteran, Rose is still prone to an amateurish mistake.
Rose revealed after round one of The Sentry he was penalised after playing the wrong ball on the seventh hole at Kapalua's Plantation Course.
He was playing alongside American duo of Taylor Moore and Andrew Putnam.
UPDATE: Tour pro lashes out at poor reporting of Justin Rose penalty: "Not even close"
It could have been worse for Rose, but he realised his mistake before holing out.
Under the rules of golf, if he completed the hole with the incorrect ball then he would have been disqualified.
"First day back at work after the festive period was interesting," Rose wrote on X.
Perhaps he still needs a bit more time to adjust to his day job after taking some time off for Christmas.
After incurring the two-stroke penalty Rose went on to card an opening round of 2-under 71, seven strokes back of the early leader Sahith Theegala.
This was not the first time Rose has made a silly mistake. During the 2013 BMW Championship he also incurred a penalty after inadvertently moving his ball with a practice swing.
