Davis Riley took down World No.1 Scottie Scheffler to capture his second career title on the PGA Tour and his first as an individual following a commanding victory at the Charles Schwab Challenge.

Riley, 27, carded a level-par 70 in tough final-round conditions to finish the week on 14-under par at famed Colonial Country Club in Texas.

That was enough for a five-shot victory over Scheffler (71) and Keegan Bradley (67).

Riley was greeted on the 18th green by his wife Alexandra Patton

The win marks a second career PGA Tour title for Riley, who landed his first alongside Nick Hardy in the team Zurich Classic of New Orleans in 2023.

Riley had incredibly not chalked up a top-10 finish all season prior to this week's victory.

He now moves to 55th in the FedEx Cup standings, and also locks up his place in the two remaining Signature Events of the PGA Tour season at the Memorial (6-9 June) and the Travelers Championship (20-23 June).

"Yeah knew coming into today would be tough with the World No.1 breathing down my neck, but I hung in there and played some good golf coming down the stretch," said Riley.

Scheffler, who was four shots behind entering the final day and in the last group of the day with Riley, failed to fire for much of the day and the two-time Masters champion slumped to a disappointing 1-over 71.

That saw home-favourite Scheffler finish the week five shots back on 9-under par.

The tie for second marks a 10th straight top-10 finish for Scheffler on the PGA Tour in 2024.

Even more impressively, it marks a sixth top-two finish in his last seven appearances on the PGA Tour.

Scheffler remains a runaway FedEx Cup leader following four victories in his last seven starts.

The 10-time PGA Tour is scheduled to be arraigned on 3 June following his shock arrest before his second round of the US PGA last week.

His arraignement falls just a week before the 2024 US Open at Pinehurst.

Fellow two-time major champion Collin Morikawa (68) finished in solo fourth on 8-under par.

The weekend of the Charles Schwab Challenge was played out in a sombre atmosphere after two-time PGA Tour winner Grayson Murray passed away on Saturday morning.

Murray, 30, withdraw from the tournament after the 16th hole in the second round.

He cited 'illness' as the reason for the WD.

But Murray's parents confirmed in a statement during the final round that their son died by suicide on Saturday morning.

Murray had started the tournament with a round of 2-under 68, but he was 5-over par thru 16 holes and just outside the cut mark when he withdrew from the tournament on Friday.
