Angel Cabrera gets off to shocking start in PGA Tour Champions return
Disgraced former Masters champion Angel Cabrera off to horror start on PGA Tour Champions return at Trophy Hassan II in Morocco.
Disgraced Masters champion Angel Cabrera returned to the PGA Tour Champions following his two-year prison sentence for domestic violence charges, but his first round did not go quite to plan.
Cabrera, 54, finished his opening round 6-over-par to sit outside the top 60 on his return to the over 50s American circuit.
He is currently positioned 12 strokes off the pace heading into the second round on Friday.
The two-time major champion spent 30 months locked up for domestic violence offences relating to two previous girlfriends.
Cabrera was allowed back to play in the PGA Tour Champions, playing his first event in the Trophy Hassan II at Royal Golf Dar es Salam in Morocco.
The Argentine failed to score a single birdie during his opening round of the Trophy Hassan II and recorded six bogeys en route to a 79.
Returning to competitive golf in December, Cabrera has played in the PGA Tour’s Latinoamerica Development Tour and at the South Open, finishing third. Both events were in Argentina.
The Trophy Hassan II is the first time Cabrera has played competitive golf outside of Argentina since his release in August 2023.
He was able to compete in the tournament as he did not require a visa to participate in Morocco.
Cabrera has stated his dream to play at Augusta National for The Masters again, but he faces visa difficulties to enter the United States at the moment.
Other players teeing it up in Morocco include Colin Montgomerie, Jim Furyk, Jose Maria Olazabal, Thomas Bjorn and Miguel Angel Jimenez.
