Golf fans hyperventilate over massive Charlie Woods news
Tiger Woods' son Charlie Woods will attempt to qualify for his first-ever PGA Tour event this week.
Charlie Woods will look to qualify for his first-ever PGA Tour event this week when he tees up in a pre-qualifier for the Cognizant Classic (formerly the Honda Classic) in The Palm Beaches.
Tiger Woods' son Charlie Woods, 15, will tee it up in an 18-hole qualifier on Thursday 22 February at Lost Lake Golf Club in Hobe Sound, Florida.
The 18-hole qualifier Woods Jnr is competing in is one of four pre-qualifiying sites for next week's Cognizant Classic.
Charlie is the son of record-tying 82-time PGA Tour winner Tiger Woods, who unfortunately was forced to withdraw during the second round of his PGA Tour comeback at the Genesis Invitational last week.
Woods, 48, cited illness for the reason for his latest WD on the PGA Tour, as speculation now mounts as to when we could next see the 15-time major champion in action.
But back to the original story and Woods' son Charlie Woods will attempt to play his way into his first-ever PGA Tour event.
The news has come as something of a shock to ardent Woods fans, who have been losing their minds on social media since the news broke on the PGA Tour website.
Here's how some fans reacted:
"OMG I can't contain my excitement, love this news! Go Charlie!"
"Amazing news, get it King!"
"So excited for him, come on Charlie!"
"I wonder what LIV Golf's offer would be?!"
Not everyone is so pumped though.
The popular Monday Q Info Twitter account believes Charlie Woods has little to no chance of making his first PGA Tour start.
The account tweeted: "I knew he had entered a few days ago, but didn't want to bring attention to it for the course and section that isn't prepared for a big crowd.
"Also the Honda Pre-Q (it will always be Honda to me) is hard for pros to get thru. Charlie has almost no shot to get thru."
As Monday Q Info makes clear, it will be no simple task for Charlie to play his way into the Cognizant Classic in The Palm Beaches, however, as he will have to jump through a number of hoops to get there.
There is also a Monday qualifier for Charlie to come through should he be successful this Thursday.
According to the PGA Tour, "approximately 25 players and ties will advance to the event’s Monday qualifier, from which four players will earn spots in the Cognizant Classic in The Palm Beaches."
Charlie Woods will tee off at 7.39am local time on Thursday and he will be playing alongside Ruaidhri Mcgee and Olin Browne Jr, the latter who is the son of three-time PGA Tour winner Olin Browne.
The Cognizant Classic will take place on Thursday February 29 and conclude on Sunday March 3.
The tournament, formerly known as the Honda Classic, will take place at the PGA National's Champion Course in Palm Beach Gardens in Florida.
Charlie has competed in a number of big tournaments in recent years, none more in the spotlight than when alongside his father Tiger Woods at the PNC Championship over the past four seasons.
Although Team Woods has yet to win the father-son event before Christmas, they did finish a respectable second place in 2021.
That was of course the year of Woods' car crash, which falls three years this Friday.
During the 2021 PNC Championship, Charlie and Tiger set a new PNC tournament record of 11 straight birdies in the Scramble format.
In one of Charlie's most recent big events, he finished T17 at the Notah Begay III Junior Golf National Championship.
He shot a final-round 68 that week.
