The Open Championship Third Round: LIVE leaderboard and updates from Royal Troon

Welcome to live golf scores, updates and commentary from the third round of The Open Championship at Royal Troon.

American Billy Horschel will take a one-shot lead into the final round of the 2024 Open Championship

Horschel, playing alongside England's Justin Rose, carded a third round of 69 to sit atop the leaderboard on 4-under par.

Rose battled hard to card a 73 and sits one behind Horschel with five other golfers.

Xander Schauffele, who claimed his first major title earlier in the year, is one of those players.

Thriston Lawrence, Russell Henley, Sam Burns and qualifier Daniel Brown are also on 3-under.

World number one Scottie Scheffler carded a level par 71 and trails by three.

Shane Lowry held the 36-hole lead but endured a tough day on the Ayrshire links on Friday.

The 2019 Open champion carded a 77 to drop back to ninth on the leaderboard.

High-profile players to miss the 36-hole cut included Rory McIlroy, Tiger Woods, Bryson DeChambeau, Cameron Smith and Viktor Hovland.

A double bogey to close for Brown

Brown -3, Lowry -1 (18)

After splashing out from the edge of the fairway bunker, Brown finds the sand with his approach when he was trying to set up an outside chance to save par.

He splashes out and misses the bogey effort.

That will be two dropped shots on the final hole.

Lowry gets relief from the grandstand and, agonisingly, his par attempt stops in the jaws!

That's a 77 for Lowry

20:11
Lowry is in the grandstand

Shane Lowry has just played his approach so far right he's in the grandstand.

Brown takes his medicine and nudges his ball forward.

20:09
Closing bogey for Horschel

Horschel -4, Rose -3 (18)

Rosey sends his approach into 18th into the greenside bunker but plays a beauty to set up a brilliant chance for a closing four.

Can he do it?

You bet he can.

Huge roars!

Horschel misses left and watches in agony as his par attempt drifts by.

Let's see what Lowry and Brown can do.

20:07
A wild one from Shane

Lowry has gone so far right with his tee shot at the 18th hole he's lucky he didn't hit the clubhouse.

Brown, meanwhile, has drawn an awful lie.

His golf ball settles just on the edge of the fairway bunker...

No stance there!

20:04
Xander Schauffele sums up how difficult it was today...

Schauffele carded a 69 today and he's delighted to be in the mix.

Was he watching the leaderboard today, though?

"It was hard to look up," he told reporters.

"I didn't see too many leader boards. I saw some here and there, but I didn't really care too much for them.

"Today was a day where you're one bad shot away from having a nightmare on certain holes. You really just had to keep it in front of you."

20:00
Bogey for the leader

Brown -5, Lowry -2 (17)

Brown follows Lowry into the bunker and has drawn the worse lie.

It's plugged.

He splashes out, and Lowry applauds the effort.

"Great shot," he says.

It's a bogey for Brown though, who can't find the cup from 53 feet to save his par.

Something for Lowry to cheer about at long last, though.

He buries one from 20 feet for par. He absolutely loved that!

19:56
Two balls in play

Rose and Horschel are in play at the 18th. Barely.

The Englishman sprays one right and his ball settles on the path, but it's okay.

Horschel is in the fairway, too, but is miles back.

19:53
Shane Lowry is fuming

Lowry -2 (17*)

Shane Lowry is raging.

He is demanding his tee shot at the 17th misses the greenside bunker but it doesn't listen.

He slams his club to the ground.

That is likely plugged...

19:51
Horschel keeps it rolling

Horschel -5, Rose -3 (17)

Horschel comes up short of the green at the 17th.

Then he almost holes out from 24 yards.

It's a gimme par and he will take that all day.

Rose was in the bunker and he had 18 feet for par.

It kisses the right edge of the cup but doesn't drop.

Rose slips back...

19:48
Daniel Brown regains the solo lead

Brown -6, Lowry -2 (16)

We've just seen a truly epic shot from Daniel Brown.

Playing his third into the par-5 16th, he chips a mid-iron from 138 yards to four feet.

Can he make the birdie? Of course he can.

Lowry has an outside chance to get one back, but will settle for par.

19:40
Billy Horschel is loving every minute of this

Horschel -5, Rose -4 (16)

The American lays up at the par-5 16th.

From 165 yards, the wind grabs his third and he's in the bunker.

It is a truly terrible lie. Completely plugged.

He wastes no time and takes an almighty thump at his golf ball and almost holes it.

It's an easy par but Horschel's face was a picture.

He's laughing and joking in the howling wind and rain.

Rose has a decent look at birdie, but it just drifts by.

19:36
Scheffler on the move

Scheffler -2 (17)

Ridiculous shot from the world number one, who fires a dart to four feet at the 17th.

Judging by his putting so far today, you would have backed him to miss.

But he holes it to move to three back.

19:34
Lowry 6-over on the day

Lowry -2, Brown -5 (15)

Lowry drops another shot, two-putting from nearly 40 feet.

But Daniel Brown gets up and down 38 yards...

19:29
Lowry in huge trouble at the 15th

Lowry -3 (15*)

To say the par-4 15th is playing brutally long would be an understatement right now.

Lowry's tee shot finds the fairway, but it only goes 235 yards and he's got 265 yards to go.

His second finds the bunker protecting the green and he's left himself 38 feet to save his par.

It's looking like another dropped shot for Lowry

19:25
Schauffele drops one shot at the last

Xander Schauffele can't salvage a par at the 18th.

But he tidies up the bogey for a 3-under 69.

He's right in the mix.

It was a day to forget for Patrick Cantlay, though, who signs for a 75.

19:23
Rose shows his class

Rose -4, Horschel -5 (14)

Rose misses the green left with his approach at the par-4 14th.

He's not happy with the crowd, as some appear to get too close as he studies his greenside chip from 45 yards.

Rose eventually leaves himself about seven feet and rolls in the right-to-lefter.

Huge roars.

Horschel ticks off another par

19:19
Schauffele makes a mistake on 18...

Schauffele -4 (18*)

Xander finds the fairway bunker at his final hole.

That means one thing.

Chip out and try and save par.

19:18
"He's basically missed every putt"

Lowry -3, Brown -5 (14)

Lowry is ticked.

He was leaning after his tee shot at the par-3 14th, hoping his ball would bounce softly and go left.

It listens, and he nudges one to about six feet.

He cannot save par, and Sir Nick Faldo sums it up from the commentary booth.

"He's basically missed every putt over the last six holes."

Lowry is now 4-over on the day.

His playing partner salvages his par...

19:09
A forgettable day for Koepka

Brooks Koepka looks visibly annoyed.

And rightly so.

He cards a 78 and sits on 8-over.

We spoke about DJ hanging tough, but a double bogey at the 17th will also have him raging.

DJ cards a 1-over 72.

19:05
Scheffler goes backwards

Scheffler -1 (15)

My word, Scheffler has just missed a tiddler for his par at the 15th.

Should he switch back to a blade?!

19:03
Lowry steadies the ship

Lowry -4, Brown -5 (13)

Lowry escapes the 13th with a par but Brown drops back.

Meanwhile, Horschel has just played a beauty of a bunker shot...

19:00
Loose one from Horschel

Horschel -5, Rose -4 (14*)

The par-3 14th is no joke, especially because the wind has just kicked up a notch.

Rose is on the putting surface and will be delighted to escape with a three.

Horschel is screaming at his golf ball to stay right but it doesn't listen and he's in the bunker.

He might be okay, providing he doesn't get too close to the lip.

18:57
Schauffele sets up another birdie chance

Schauffele -4 (16*)

Xander continues to play nicely.

Is he a different player, now that he's a major winner?

He's got a chance to join the lead at the par-5 16th...

18:55
Gutsy from Billy

Horschel -5, Rose -4 (13)

Huge par saves from these two.

Horschel rolls one in from nine feet at perfect pace.

Rose studies his six-footer for a good while then finds the centre cup.

Home stretch now...
