Jon Rahm has revealed a complication with his wife's pregnancy could hinder his plans to play on the DP World Tour later this year.

It was speculated the rules needed to be rewritten for Rahm ahead of next year's Ryder Cup after his move to LIV last December.

But the Spaniard and his LIV teammate, England's Tyrrell Hatton, were offered a lifeline of sorts to play in New York next September.

Their fears of missing out on the Ryder Cup were eased when European Tour Group chief executive Guy Kinnings clarified both golfers simply needed to pay fines and play a minimum of four DP World Tour events to retain their memberships and be eligible for selection.

Kinnings was keen to stress this perceived 'loophole' was always there.

LIV Golf's third season comes to a close on 22 September, which has raised the prospect of seeing Rahm compete at the season-ending DP World Tour Championship.

There are other events in the Tour's schedule he could also play.

Ahead of the 152nd Open, Rahm was asked if he has paid his outstanding fines.

"We're still in conversations with the Tour," he said.

"I haven't been able to play any Tour events, so yeah, we're going to have to sort it out before I want to tee it up hopefully at the Spanish Open.

"At this point, I'm so still waiting on what might happen with my wife and daughter that I don't know if I'll be able to play or not.

"So my fall is still a little bit of a question mark when it comes to playing golf."

Rahm was pressed again whether he had paid his fines and he confirmed he had not done so yet.

He added: "I'm not going to lie, anything past September, October right now, with the situation I have with my wife and daughter, I'm really not thinking about it, to be honest"

Rahm's wife is Kelley Cahill. He did not disclose more information about the complication.

The couple met whilst they were both at university in Arizona.

They married in December 2019 and have two sons together. Kepa was born in 2021 and Eneko followed in 2022.

In March, Rahm confirmed they were expecting a third child.

"I think he can be a fantastic captain"

Rahm was more open in offering his verdict on Keegan Bradley being appointed the next Ryder Cup captain for Team USA.

He said he was surprised it wasn't Tiger Woods

Woods said in his pre-tournament news conference that he simply didn't have any time to truly devote himself to the role.

Rahm said having a Boston native captain the team in New York may not be the best thing.

"But I think they can put their differences aside for that week," he added.

"He was definitely a bit of a Captain America figure when he was there, very energetic," Rahm said of Bradley, alluding to the American's behaviour during the 2012 contest at Medinah.

"[He] had a great partnership with Phil [Mickelson], played really good golf, especially at Medinah.

"I'm not surprised. I think he could be a good captain.

"[He] cares deeply about the country. Cares deeply about the Ryder Cup."
