LIV Golf pro earns valuable OWGR points and qualifies for The Open
LIV Golf pro David Puig picks up huge OWGR points as he secures his debut in The Open.
LIV Golf pro David Puig picked up some valuable Official World Golf Ranking (OWGR) points en route to securing his place in The Open following victory on the Asian Tour at the weekend.
Puig, 22, won the Malaysian Open to mark his second victory on the Asian Tour in four months.
The young Spaniard plays for Sergio Garcia's Fireballs GC in the LIV Golf League, alongside Abraham Ancer and Eugenio Chacarra.
Puig shot two back-to-back 62s to finish 23-under-par, and become the first Spaniard to win the tournament.
The win earned him $180,000.
Puig began the final round three shots behind the leader Jared Du Toit, but quickly took the lead making five birdies on the first seven holes.
As the Malaysian Open is part of The Open Qualifying Series, Puig, runner-up Jeunghun Wang, and third-placed Denwit Boriboonsub qualified for The 152nd Open at Royal Troon Golf Club in Scotland from 18-21 July.
It will mark Puig's Open debut.
Puig shot a 71 in round two and initially felt as though victory was too far out of reach.
On his win, Puig said:
The win follows his triumphant five-stroke victory at the International Series Singapore last October, earning $360,000 in prize money.
Before joining LIV Golf in 2022, Puig was ranked 2819 in the OWGR. Puig's latest win sees him vault him from 245 to 141.
In his first two LIV Golf events this season, he has finished T38 and T15.
Another win on the Asian Tour could see Puig earn a spot at the PGA Championship.
