Bryson DeChambeau denied only caring about winning major championships after starting LIV Golf Adelaide strongly.
DeChambeau carded a 4-under 68 in front of a raucous crowd at The Grange on Friday to trail early leader Sam Horsfield by two strokes.
The American is tied for fourth with Abraham Ancer and Dustin Johnson. Joaquin Niemann and Carlos Ortiz are second after hitting 5-under 67s.
"Every time I tee it up, I want to win," DeChambeau told reporters after an entertaining first round that saw him make seven birdies, one bogey and one double bogey.
"Last year everybody said, 'Oh, you're just focused on the majors.' Well, no, I was focused every time I went out and played a golf tournament.
"But what I'm really looking for is a golf swing that is just a little bit more consistent and repeatable. I'm getting close. I'm getting really, really close.
"What I had at the U.S. Open was pretty darned good. It worked well. Obviously led to winning the U.S. Open, which was great. Want to get back to that form."
He added: "But I'm still searching for what I did so well at Greenbrier back in late '23 when I shot 58. That was the best I'd ever hit the golf ball.
"I'm always striving to get back to that place and just trying to learn what was it that exactly clicked in that manner."
In the team aspect, Torque sit atop the leaderboard on 8-under. Jon Rahm's Legion XIII and Sergio Garcia's Fireballs are tied for second on 6-under.
The defending champions, the all-Australian Ripper, had a nightmare day are currently ninth out of 13 teams.
Former Masters champion Patrick Reed was involved in the standout moment of the day, hitting a hole-in-one at the par-3 12th.

"The crazy thing was the adrenaline afterwards," Reed said.
"I was shaking going back to the tee and just couldn't kind of calm down and settle into the round after that point.
"It's one of those things that you don't really expect."
