Tyrrell Hatton's latest Ryder Cup comments after landing a record third title at the Dunhill Links on the famed Old Course at St Andrews will very much be music to the ears of Luke Donald

Hatton, who turns 33 next week, was visibly emotional on the 18th green after sealing an historic victory at the Home of Golf.

It was a moment made even more special winning for the first time with his father Jeff alongside him in the Pro-Am format.

The Englishman's seventh DP World Tour title also ensures him a well-earned rest until November.

That's because he has now secured a place in the DP World Tour Playoffs in Abu Dhabi and Dhabi next month.

Over the last couple of weeks, Hatton has now vaulted from 94th to 16th in the DP World Tour standings

Hatton was let back onto the DP World Tour last month as a result of having appealed his fines for joining LIV Golf earlier this season.

The same situation applied to his Legion XIII captain Jon Rahm.

The top 70 make it through to Abu Dhabi in the first week of November, with the top 50 then making it through to the season finale in Dubai.

Rahm, who lost in a playoff on home soil at the Open de Espana last month, finished T7 at the Dunhill Links to move to 36th on the DP World Tour standings.

Hatton made the point that if he had not played well enough at the Dunhill Links then he would have participated in the Andalucia Masters in two weeks' time, and potentially even the Korea Championship at the end of the month, to ensure his place in the Playoffs.

"So I will play Abu Dhabi and Dubai," Hatton told reporters after sealing a narrow one-shot victory over Donald's assistant captain Nicolas Colsaerts at St Andrews.

"Winning here this week allows me to take some time off, this was my fourth week in a row, and as I was saying, I really wanted to get into Abu Dhabi and Dubai, and at the start of last week, I was 94 in rankings and knew I needed a really good performance.

"I was prepared to play in Sotogrande, and maybe even South Korea if I needed to to try and make it to Abu Dhabi."

Hatton's Dunhill Links victory also ensured plenty of other perks.

Not only does Hatton vault from 38th to 20th in the Official World Golf Rankings, but he also bumps himself up to fifth in the 2025 European Ryder Cup team standings, which got underway at the British Masters last month.

Rahm is now up to eighth, two spots outside the automatic top six.

Donald will then get six captain's picks.

Hatton has made it no secret that despite being a LIV Golf player where there are no OWGR or Ryder Cup points up for grabs, he very much intends to earn as many points as possible via the DP World Tour and the majors to ensure he is boarding a plane to New York next September.

While you would fully expect Hatton to receive one of six captain's picks in the team should he require one, Hatton aims to take that decision out of Donald's hands and play his way in automatically.

Now allowed back into DP World Tour events, at least until a verdict is reached on the appeal of his LIV Golf fines, Hatton has made it clear he will play in as many tournaments on the former European Tour circuit as required to make the team on merit.

"It's a Ryder Cup year," said Hatton with a glint in his eye ahead of Bethpage Black in September 2025.

"I want to earn as many points as I possibly can, and you know, I'm committed to try my best to earn the points that I need to be on that team.

"If it means playing events that you wouldn't normally play, and not to make that sound as a negative. It's more of if I need to play, I'm going to play.

"So I'm happy that I have been able to win this week and I can have four weeks off, and then I'll be fresh, hopefully ready to play some good golf in Abu Dhabi."

Hatton formed an unbeaten partnership with Rahm at the 2023 Ryder Cup in Italy.

Donald will no doubt be eager to send them out again as Europe go in search of retaining the biennial contest against Keegan Bradley's United States side.

Another perk for Hatton is that with enough points in the bag to make the DP World Tour Playoffs, he will be able to attend his Ryder Cup teammate Matt Fitzpatrick's wedding in two weeks' time.
