Johannes Veerman claimed his second DP World Tour title in dramatic fashion after firing a stunning final-round 69 to win the Nedbank Golf Challenge by a single shot.

Veerman started the day five strokes off the lead at Gary Player Country Club but carded six birdies and three bogeys in testing conditions to set a 5-under-par clubhouse target for the final groups.

It went right to the wire, with a bogey on the last denying South African Aldrich Potgieter the chance to face Veerman in a play-off.

The American got off to a mixed start on Sunday, taking advantage of the long second for the fourth day in a row from four feet before giving the shot straight back at the third.

He bounced back courtesy of a delightful 20-foot birdie putt at the par-three fourth, only to bogey the fifth. Another lengthy birdie putt dropped at the sixth before 2021 D+D Real Czech Masters winner Veerman closed the front nine with a tap-in birdie.

Further gains followed at the 11th and 14th courtesy of more wonderful putting, and Veerman found himself alone at the summit when Potgieter ran into trouble at the 12th.

A bogey on the 16th dropped Veerman back to five under before he safely parred the final two holes to set a target that no-one could match and claim an emotional victory on his Sun City debut. The two-time DP World Tour winner now tops the Race to Dubai and Opening Swing Rankings.

Potgieter, Romain Langasque and Matthew Jordan finished in a tie for second one shot back.

"I didn't have the best seasons the last two years. I put a lot of work in, me and my team - countless hours," said Veerman.

"To win this season, to start off this season with a win is indescribable.I knew I had a chance but actually thought I might have lost it on the 16th when I three-putted and missed that putt. That one really hurt but it doesn't even matter!

"Words can't describe things like this - it is a surreal feeling. Especially because I was kind of lurking around there the whole week, and I have been as well in previous tournaments for the last four or five that I have played and you don't quite get the job done and finish fifth or eighth. So to come in the back nine and to have a shot at it, and to walk away with the trophy is like, what just happened?!

"It's amazing. This is my first time playing the Nedbank and when I showed up on 18 for my practice round I could not believe how big the grandstands where, I thought wow, is there really going to be that many people here this week, and sure enough it was full since Thursday. The whole atmosphere and vibe of this tournament was world class.

"It means so much to me, my family, my team. My family sacrificed so much, they came out with me, we had a business that we sold that my wife ran, and she sold it so we could be together as a family out here on the road and travel with two kids, so it was a lot of work to say goodbye to friends and family for a while year, so to essentially have it pay off is relieving, satisfying, all of those words."
