Ewen Ferguson reduced to tears after landing DP World Tour hat-trick
An emotional Ewen Ferguson paid tribute to his family as he punched his ticket to The Open with victory at the BMW International Open.
An emotional Ewen Ferguson punched his ticket to The Open Championship in two weeks' time after sealing his DP World Tour hat-trick at the BMW International Open in Germany.
Ferguson, 28, carded a solid final-round 68 to finish the week at GolfClub Munchen Eichenried on 18-under par.
A two-putt par on the par-5 18th was enough to see off playing partner Jordan Smith (70) and David Micheluzzi (68) by two shots.
Ferguson now becomes the first Scottish winner on the DP World Tour this season, and the third Scot to win the BMW International Open following in the footsteps of Sandy Lyle (1991) and Colin Montgomerie (1999).
The win marks Ferguson's third on the DP World Tour to go alongside his victories in 2022 at the Commercial Bank Qatar Masters and ISPS Handa World Invitational.
Not only does the win vault Ferguson up to a career-best 16th in the Race to Dubai standings this season, but it also punches his ticket to the 152nd Open Championship on home turf at Royal Troon.
Ferguson was reduced to tears as he tapped home from inches for par on 18.
During Ferguson's victory speech with Inci Mehmet of Sky Sports Golf, the Scot struggled to hold back tears as he paid tribute to his family for all their support in helping him fulfil his dream on Tour.
Ferguson said:
"Honestly, I can't believe it. The last four holes, I thought it was a dream.
"I was hitting it so well, and even longer than usual. I just wanted to do it for my family at home, I love them so much. They were in mind with every shot today.
"This is such a hard game, I've been sick, but it's now so much weight off my shoulders now. I'm just so happy, I can't believe it."
Jesper Svensson, Laurie Canter, Nacho Elvira and Matteo Manassero also booked their places at The Open as part of the top five players on the Race to Dubai not already exempt, while Guido Migliozzi confirmed his status as the winner of the European Swing.
On having punched his ticket to The Open this month, Ferguson is intent to not just make up the numbers.
Ferguson said:
"Yeah teeing it up at Troon, The Open is the tournament we all want to play in.
"I feel like I could do well there.
"I've got the Scottish Open next week too, it's just such an exciting time for me.
"I can't stop thinking about my family though, I can't wait to go home and see them all."
