Golf fans cracked obvious jokes about Abu Dhabi's laws after Tommy Fleetwood thanked the 'wonderful human' who returned his possessions.

Fleetwood posted on X on 29 December that he accidentally left his backpack in the airport when he landed in the capital of the UAE with his family.

But a kind soul handed it in to security, according to the golfer.

"To the wonderful human that handed it in, thank you," the 33-year-old wrote.

"Another amazing advert for this country."

Fleetwood currently lives in Dubai with his wife Clare and their son Franklin.

The golfer is also the stepfather to Clare's two sons from her first marriage.

One cheeky X user pointed out that when the penalty for theft is getting your hand chopped off, 'people tend to give things back'.

That's not true, but in Abu Dhabi and in the wider UAE the punishment for theft can vary between heavy fines and jail time.

Perpetrators of petty theft can be given as much as six months' imprisonment.

Whilst more serious crimes, such as robbery, can mean up to 15 years' in prison.

Here's a selection of comments from Fleetwood's post:

"Abu Dhabi is one of the best places I've ever had the pleasure of spending time in. I spent Christmas there last year and it was beautiful."

"The alternative for not turning it in was at least losing a hand."

"Lived and worked over twenty years in Dubai. I always felt safe. Honestly, it was amazing."

"Well done them. Good news. Must have been a huge relief. Shame that some people still have to post negative comments when somebody does something honest and good, rather than just applauding it."

"Can't imagine it would have happened in the UK mate."

"Nothing gets pinched there. The UAE is best place on the planet: law-abiding, tolerant, friendly. Traffic's a nightmare is the only issue but then I live in London so it's still not as bad as here!"

"Tommy, thank you for sharing this amazing story. It's nice to know there are nice people out there!"

"Or if you get caught robbing in Dubai you are completely f-----. But decent gesture to hand it in."
