Matthew Baldwin has revealed comical details behind his bizarre tee shot at the par-4 4th that went just eight yards in the first round of the British Masters hosted by Sir Nick Faldo at The Belfry.

Baldwin, 38, explained in a video interview with the DP World Tour that he felt something wrong with his driver head as he swung away.

He tried to pause on his downswing but his momentum carried him through and his ball ended up travelling between his legs and into the rough in front of the tee box.

Baldwin told the DP World Tour:

"Got to the top of my backswing and I felt a bit of a crack in the head, so I tried to stop but momentum carried me on and I just clipped this much (points to the sole), and it went through my legs and nearly into the water hazard directly behind me. I think in total it went about eight yards so yeah it was interesting.

"I instantly laughed just because I assumed that because I had attempted to stop that I would be able to re-peg it up and play the hole, but it turns out because I made contact with the ball that it was actually a shot and I had to play the next one from a yard in front of the tee markers in the rough. I had to hit a 4-iron hybrid."

To the Englishman's credit, he went on limit the damage by making a bogey.

Baldwin ended up shooting an opening round of level-par 72.

He then carded a 68 to comfortably make the weekend at The Belfry.

Baldwin is currently ranked 388th in the world.

He captured his maiden DP World Tour title at the SDC Championship in March 2023.

Baldwin has yet to register a top-10 finish on the DP World Tour this season and as a result he is fighting to keep his card for 2025.
