WATCH: European Ryder Cup fans goad Patrick Cantlay in a very simple way
Patrick Cantlay was goaded by the European fans after reports surfaced he isn't wearing a hat at the Ryder Cup because he isn't being paid.
ROME - Patrick Cantlay was goaded by European fans at the Ryder Cup over his apparent unhappiness at not being paid to play in the contest.
Cantlay, 30, was described by Sky Sports' Jamie Weir as leading a rift among the Team USA locker room.
The American golfer has not been wearing a cup thus far and it is said his reason for doing so is a protest at not being compensated.
Players do not compete for prize money at the Ryder Cup. Golfers do have a say, though, at which charities they would like money donated to.

European fans who had likely had too much sunshine and too much beer began waving their hats at the American during his Saturday afternoon fourballs match with Wyndham Clark against Matthew Fitzpatrick and Rory McIlroy.
Before Cantlay teed off one fan shouted: "Somebody give Patrick some money".
Another added: "Team Europe will pay your wages."

Former U.S. Ryder Cup captain Paul Azinger described the report as 'garbage' on the CBS broadcast.
And Cantlay's own team have reached out to Barstool Sports' Dan Rapaport to deny there being any 'split' amongst the team.
Rapaport posted on X:
Throughout the 2022-2023 PGA Tour season there have been various reports Cantlay is unhappy with his compensation amid the LIV Golf drama.
Cantlay was reported by Golfweek's Eamon Lynch as leading a coup d'état against commissioner Jay Monahan.
Lynch reported Cantlay was against the PGA Tour-PIF deal because it would lose the players bargaining chips.
That prompted the likes of Justin Thomas, Rickie Fowler, Adam Scott and Will Zalatoris to release a join statement to combat disinformation.
Regarding Cantlay—source close to him says reports of any sort of “fracture” are unfounded. U.S. team are united. Getting butt kicked, but united. Cantlay and Schauffele are in same locker room as everyone else. He also didn’t wear hat at Whistling Straits. Took pictures at Gala…
