Adam Scott was left red-faced down the par-4 18th as his drive went just 35 yards in the third round of the Wells Fargo Championship at Quail Hollow.

Scott's drive clattered way left into the trees down the left side and flicked his ball out onto the next set of tees in front of him.

The Australian then sent his second shot way right into the trees, but he punched out short of the green and got up and down for a bogey-five.

"Yeah, I tried to cut one off the creek and I pulled it and it hit the tree right off the tee and just dropped in front of the tee box. It's a long par 4 that way," said Scott.

Scott finds himself at 11-under par for 54 holes and five strokes behind Wyndham Clark, who fired a flawless round of 8-under 63 to move to 16-under par.

Clark, who is going in search of his maiden PGA Tour title, is two strokes clear of compatriot Xander Schauffele, who carded an equally impressive 64 in the same group.

Schaffuele, who is looking to win his eighth PGA Tour title and first of the season, caught fire at the end of his third round when going birdie-eagle-birdie on holes 14, 15 and 16.

Clark, who has made a handful of top-10 finishes this season, is ranked 80th in the OWGR.

Schauffele is ranked fifth.

England's Tyrrell Hatton finds himself five strokes behind Clark on 11-under par alongside Scott after a 68.

He understandably got a bit ratty after a three-putt for par on the 15th.

Hatton's compatriot Tommy Fleetwood bogeyed the last for a 67 but he remains in the hunt for his maiden PGA Tour title at 10-under par alongside Harris English (66) and Sungjae Im (68).

Canada's Adam Svensson had moved to 12-under par but he endured a horror finish with a quadruple-bogey eight on 18 to fall out of contention.
