A group of campaigners are appealing to the UK government for help to try and prevent the closure of their golf course.

Allestree Park Golf Course in Derby has been closed but the group are trying to get it reopened at the earliest opportunity.

The Derby Telegraph have reported that Derby City Council, which has a Conservative majority, closed down the course in December 2020.

They did so because they claimed there weren't any credible bidders who could run the course.

Now protestors have written to Michael Gove, the secretary of state, to try and force action.

More than 600 people have also signed a petition trying to save the course.

The group insist there are at least three parties interested in taking it over.

They have lodged the petition under an "right to contest application" which applies to controversy surrounding land and property owned by local government departments.

At the moment, Derby City Council are also considering whether to plant 500,000 trees in the green space and destroy the course.

Campaigners also allege Ian Woosnam is one of the "interested parties" who could bid and run the course.
