'Seve had the best short game'- wedge guru Vokey

Renowned wedge designer Bob Vokey said Seve Ballesteros is the best wedge player he has ever worked with, ranking the Spaniard above Phil Mickelson and Tiger Woods.

Vokey explained: “I get asked all the time who were the best wedge players I’ve ever worked with. I never hesitate. Seve (Ballesteros) is number one, (Lee) Trevino is number two, and then Tiger - with Phil Mickelson right there very close.

“Tiger, from 1998 to 1999 to 2001 when he finished playing my wedges, is in that group. He’s got the talent, he’s got the game, he’s got the feeling. He’s phenomenal. And I think he’ll get it back.”

Ballesteros's magical short game got him out of many tight spots in his 33-year career and propelled him to five major titles and 50 European Tour wins, a record to date. He is hailed for almost single-handedly transforming golf in Europe with his unique, swash-buckling style and fighting spirit.

The Canadian said the Ryder Cup legend was a pleasure to work with and explained the pair shared similar beliefs when it came to wedge set-up.

Vokey picked out Rory McIlroy, Rickie Fowler and Michael Sim as the best wedge players from the present crop.
