"Forgiveness meets fast" as Callaway hits the heights with Boeing on new XR 16 driver

Callaway launches XR 16 driver & fairway

Callaway has joined forces with aircraft specialists Boeing to improve the ball speed and aerodynamics of its driver technology with the new XR 16 driver.

The brand claims it has engineered its "most forgiving driver shape ever" and that Boeing has "made it faster" with a re-engineered Speed Step Crown.

Callaway's latest and greatest driver for 2016 has a high speed head and lower drag in the crown to add ball speed. A new specific "trip step" feature keeps the flow attached to the surface of the crown longer to reduce the drag.

In robot testing, Callaway indicates there was an increase in 0.9 mph clubhead speed, while in player testing, there was 1.9 mph head speed - something we saw for ourselves on our first look review in Dubai.

The driver is also packed full of forgiveness with its larger head shape for more MOI, a stretched out crown with a bigger footprint and a CG that is lower and deeper.

For more ball speed all across the face, Callaway has added its next generation R-MOTO face that is 9 grams lighter and up to 19% thinner.

Golfers can also choose from a wide selection of no-upcharge shaft options to fit their swing speed.

RRP: £289 (available January 29)

Callaway has also unveiled an XR 16 Pro driver (RRP: £329) for better players, which comes in a more compact 450cc version and features a more neutral CG bias.

Callaway has also unveiled the XR 16 fairway wood, a club that combines the company's highest MOI, highest COR, and lowest CG ever.

With a larger footprint, the brand claims the head shape gives the golfer "all the confidence and the technology to hit it long and straight."

Callaway has also improved its category-defining face cup for high ball speed all across the face, added great turf interaction, and put in extra speed from an aerodynamic head shape.

RRP: £189 (available January 29)

The company has also launched an XR 16 Pro fairway wood (RRP £199) for better players, which comes in a more compact, aerodynamic shape.
