Angel delight at Greenbrier Classic as Argentine uses PING G30 driver and 3-wood for first time
ANGEL CABRERA won the Greenbrier Classic last night for his first non-major victory on the PGA Tour, closing with a consecutive round of 6-under 64.
The 44-year-old Argentine, who had only previously landed the 2007 US Open and 2009 Masters on American soil, finished on 16-under for the tournament and two shots clear of an emotional George McNeil, who fired a 9-under 61 after learning his sister Michele had died of cancer prior to his tee time.
Starting the day two shots off the 54-hole lead set by Billy Hurley III, Cabrera vaulted into a three-shot lead over McNeil, who had set the clubhouse total of 14-under earlier in the day, when making birdie at 11 and 12, shortly before holing out for eagle from 176 yards at the par-4 13th.
Despite consecutive bogeys at 14 and 15, Cabrera sealed the deal with a two-putt birdie at the par-5 17th to ensure calmness down the par-3 18th.
"This was a great opportunity," Cabrera said through an interpreter. "I wanted it. I needed to win a tournament. I felt under control today out there, and I didn't want to let it get away from me."
The win was made even extra special for the PING staff player as it was the first week he introduced the new PING G30 driver and fairway wood, which Golfmagic was afforded a first look at out in Germany on Friday.
Cabrera was one of eight PING staff players to bag the G30 driver at the Greenbrier.
The two-time major champion averaged 307.1 yards off the tee for the week and ranked fourth in driving accuracy, hitting 82.14% of the fairways.
