Who is Sam Bennett? Meet the amateur in contention at The Masters
U.S. amateur Sam Bennett shoots the second-lowest score by an amateur through 36 holes in Masters history.
Sam Bennett is making his name known at The Masters this year as the U.S. amateur is putting on an incredible performance at Augusta National.
Bennett, 23, was one of seven amateurs in the field this year at Augusta and the only one who made the cut at this year's Masters Tournament.
And the Texan is doing much more than just securing low amateur at the season's first major as he's kept himself in the mix through two rounds in Georgia.
The 2022 U.S. Amateur winner recorded an impressive 4-under 68 during Thursday's first round after going birdie-eagle to begin the tournament. In his second round, Bennett recorded five birdies and just one bogey en route to a second 68. With his tournament total of 8-under par after two rounds, he now holds the second lowest score by an amateur after 36 holes at The Masters.
Bennett is a fifth-year senior at Texas A&M University and is ranked No. 6 in the World Amateur Golf Rankings. He was four strokes back of leader Brooks Koepka, a LIV Golf player, after the second round concluded on Saturday. Koepka was at 12-under par after rounds of 65 and 67, a year after he missed the cut at Augusta National.
However, Bennett is not the only one making headlines at Augusta this year. Fred Couples made Masters history as the oldest person to make the cut at 63, while Tiger Woods matched Gary Player and Couples' record of 23 consecutive cuts made at the major championship.

Bennett, who was named the SEC Golfer of the Year in 2022, is playing the third round alongside Koepka and Jon Rahm, who was 10-under par after 36 holes.
Three past amateurs have finished runner-up, but none have won The Masters before.
