Does a Canadian have a chance to win The Masters this week?

Three Canadians will look to cement their own legacy on the 20-year anniversary of Mike Weir's Masters win.

It's been 20 years since Mike Weir became the first men's golfer from Canada to win a major, and two decades later no one has joined him. While Brooke Henderson has become a massive star, major winner and one of the top players on the LPGA Tour, we have not seen the same since Weir over on the PGA Tour. But as we head into The Masters, all of that could change, writes GolfMagic's Canadian-born Junior Writer Lara Kuipers.

In addition to Weir, who has a lifelong invite to The Masters as a past winner, there are three Canadians who received an invite to Augusta this year.

Multiple Canadians in The Masters field has become the norm in recent years, but there's something different about this season's bunch: they're all already 2022-23 PGA Tour winners.

So, could this be Canada's best chance at finding a second major winner on the men's side?

Here's a breakdown of the three Canadians in the field this week seeking to join Weir as a men's major winner:

Does a Canadian have a chance to win The Masters this week?

Corey Conners

At No. 28, Corey Conners is the top-ranked Canadian men's player in the world. He jumped 12 spots from No. 40 after his clutch second career PGA Tour victory at the Valero Texas Open last week, putting him in a perfect position as he heads to The Masters. Conners has been the most dominant Canadian player on the PGA Tour in recent years and if any Canadian is going to win at Augusta again, it will most likely be him.

The 31-year-old's iron play is well suited for the unforgiving Augusta National greens, and he's consistently had strong performances there in the past few years. His best finish came last year with a tie for sixth, which was also his best finish at any major championship to date. If Conners can bring the momentum from last week in San Antonio with him, a green jacket is definitely a possibility.

Mackenzie Hughes

After being left off the Presidents Cup International Team in the fall of 2022, Mackenzie Hughes came out strong as ever for the the beginning of the 2022-23 season, quickly earning his own second career PGA Tour victory at the Sanderson Farms Championship.

But since the new year began, the 32-year-old has largely cooled off, with three missed cuts in his last seven starts. However, Hughes is entering Augusta with a solid finish at the World Golf Championships-Match Play, one of the stronger fields of the PGA Tour season. He hasn't had great success at his previous Masters appearances, but Hughes often has a clutch putter which could bode well at Augusta.

Adam Svensson

Adam Svensson is the wild card from this group of Canadians. The 29-year-old from Surrey, B.C., earned his maiden PGA Tour victory in late 2022 with the RSM Classic, which also resulted in an invite to his first major: The Masters. Augusta National is unique, and often tricky for first-timers, and having never played in it before, Svensson will no doubt have an uphill battle ahead of him.

Svensson's advantage that he'll need to channel at Augusta will be his accuracy in both his approach and around the green. If he can add in a hot putter, there's no counting this Canadian out.
