Bedford Golf Club has closed down despite welcoming more than 30,000 rounds of golf at its venue in 2020.

The popular Bedfordshire golf club, which was enjoying a golf boom that many clubs up and down the United Kingdom also experienced during the coronavirus lockdown this year, has been forced into closure after its leaseholder's tenure expired.

Bedford Golf Club, which first opened for play in 1999, becomes at least the 11th golf club in the UK that we have heard about to close down in recent months during the coronavirus pandemic.

Other clubs to shut down this year, or in the process of shutting down include Allestree Park Golf Club, Swinton Park, Rusper Park, Cleeve Hill, Browns GC, Brucefields Family Golf Centre, Brandon Wood GC, Bullwell Hall, Patsull Park Hotel Golf and Country Club and Magnolia Park Hotel and Golf Club.

A spokesperson for Bidwells, the agent responsible for the land, told the Bedford Independent that it was the golf club’s decision not to renew their lease and the closure of the facility has been amicably agreed between the tenant and the trustees of the land.

She said she would be seeking to get a commercial income by making the clubhouse available to hire or changing its use to a children’s nursery, but there are no plans to build on the golf course.

"The business lease is at an end and the golf club has taken the decision not to renew their lease," she said.
