Not all winter jackets are created equal, and the Merge from Peter Millar was certainly crafted to stand head and shoulders above the rest.
For those unfamiliar with Peter Millar, the American brand specialises in performance apparel that seamlessly blends classic American styling with innovative fabrics to create some of the most luxurious golf apparel on the market.
The Merge Hybrid jacket is one of the standout pieces from the current collection, and it's designed with winter weather in mind.
The jacket comes in four different colours, and thanks to the water resistant treatment it's a versatile layer that can be worn year round.
To fully test it out, I took it out for 18 holes at the beautiful Berkshire Golf Club.
Let's get into it.
As previously mentioned, this jacket comes in four colours, and I was fortunate enough to get my hands on the stealthy all black version.
Aesthetically it ticks a lot of boxes for me. From the lightly quilted body to the discreet Peter Millar branding on the shoulder, it's understated but sleek which is combination that I think will hit the right notes with golfers of all ages.
The padding on the front and back adds contouring to the silhouette and the grey zippers also bring a touch of contrast to the primarily blacked out design.
The quilting is stitched using a chevron pattern which again, is only a small detail, but one that elevates the overall look.
In terms of functionality, the jacket features two zipped pockets on the front, as well as a chest pocket, which in all honesty I barely used during the round. I can honestly never figure out what could possibly need to be stored on the chest pocket, and it feels like anything there would feel awkward when swinging.
The double zip on the front also allows you to slightly undo the jacket from the bottom, which again, I didn't use but it's a nice option to have.
The water resistant treatment did see some action during my round, and although it was only a very brief shower, the jacket held up well and I didn't need to reach for my umbrella.
The fit of this jacket is spot on. I'm 6'1 and wore a medium, but there was still plenty of space within the jacket for additional layering, and thanks to the stretchy arms, I didn't notice any restriction in movement during my swing.
The thoughtful design is comfortable, athletic and sleek enough to almost make you feel like you aren't wearing a jacket at all.
Lightweight, breathable and very soft, this jacket ticks every box possible for winter golf.
The highest compliment I could possible pay this jacket is that it's quickly become an absolutely essential staple in my golfing wardrobe.
As soon as the temperature drops below a certain point, it's the first outer layer I reach for and despite being one of the more expensive option on the market in 2024, it's worth every penny.
Verdict
If you're someone who likes to play a lot of golf, and won't let winter conditions put you off, then this jacket would make an excellent addition to your rotation.
Stylish, comfortable and very versatile, it's a standout piece from 2024 and well worth the high price point.
Peter Millar rarely misses when it comes to apparel, and the Merge Hybrid jacket is another home run for the American brand.
