Cobra Darkspeed X Driver Review
GolfMagic tests out Cobra's new Darkspeed X Driver.
Cobra Darkspeed X Driver: Key Features
- Refined aerodynamic design: An improved aero shape features a streamlined face to topline radius, a higher crown peak, raised skirt and reduced clubface surface area to maximize speed
- Tour inspire shaping: A refined clubhead shape features an elevated look at address that promotes workability and control with added forgiveness
- Larger PWRSHELL with A.I designed H.O.T Face: A 10% larger PWRSHELL L-cup face creates more robust distance, while an A.I. designed H.O.T. Face delivers more efficient speed & spin across the clubface
- PWR-BRIDGE: A lower and more forward positioning of the suspended weight unleashes even faster ball speeds
While some brands have opted to prioritise forgiveness when it comes to drivers in 2024, Cobra has instead gone in all in on speed, and based on what we've seen so far, it's fair to say it accomplished its goals.
The new line of Darkspeed drivers features three models: the Darkspeed X, Max and LS. In this review, we will focus on the X model, which is aimed at the broadest range of players looking for an ideal combination of speed and forgiveness, which has lead us to select it as one of the best golf drivers of 2024.
Cobra's Aerojet range from 2023 was one of the best-performing drivers of the year and excelled particularly well when it came to distance, so what has Cobra done to its new driver to improve upon 2023? Let us tell you.
Cobra has used a combination of technologies in order to increase ball speed across the face on the new Darkspeed range, including refining the overall shape of the head to improve aerodynamics, shifting weight further forward and lower using a PWR-BRIDGE weight and increasing the size of the PWR Shell insert.
Now, we will be the first to admit that all sounds very impressive, but does it perform as promised?
Well, to find out, we took the Darkspeed X driver out to Spain for some on-course testing before digging deep into the data at Custom Golf Works in Woking.
Let's get into it.
Cobra Darkspeed X Driver: Looks and Feel
Cobra is a brand that we typically associate with a loud approach to club design, be it a bright colour palette or dynamic graphics; the brand tends to produce some of the more out-there heads. However, 2024 appears to be the dawn of a new era for Cobra, and we absolutely love it.
If Batman played golf, he would undoubtedly use the Cobra Darkspeed. The almost entirely black design features flickers of blue on the sole, but the overall finish is one that can best be described as stealthy (sorry TaylorMade).
In the car industry, they would use the phrase 'murdered out' when describing a blacked-out car, and that definition is particularly appropriate considering the speed and devastating power this driver can impart on a golf ball.
Much like the sole, the crown is kept incredibly simple, featuring a completely blacked-out design with a small black alignment aid.
Towards the back of the head, you will notice a very feint carbon underlay, which blends into a completely solid texture towards the face.
We're honestly in awe of how cool this driver looks down at address. The head shape is quite long, face to back, which gives it a very sleek profile. We typically prefer this shape as it looks much more aerodynamic than the more bulbous shape that we have seen from certain drivers over the years.
While the blacked-out finish looks fantastic, there is one drawback. Annoyingly, it's a drawback we should have seen coming and planned ahead for. But alas, we did not, so now we can at least tell you about it.
Due to the matte black finish on the sole, the use of white tees will instantly mark up the driver quite aggressively.
While this is not an issue with the look of the club, the white marks really do stand out against the all-black design. So, a tip from the top. If you are contemplating buying this driver, use black tees.
In terms of feel, the Darkspeed X is one of the hottest on the market. The springy sensation you get at impact is incredibly reassuring and confidence-inspiring, and as you will soon read, that sensation is one that was reflected in the performance.
Despite its very hot feel of the face, we did have some question marks over how solid the driver felt during the swing. At times, we did feel like it lacked a touch of stability. However, with that being said, a full custom fitting with your preferred shaft could change that dramatically.
Cobra Darkspeed X Driver Performance and Forgiveness
Those of you familiar with the incredibly terrifying Stealth Bomber aircraft will know that it not only looks dangerous but also packs a hell of a punch.
The same could be said for the Cobra Darkspeed X. Having hit numerous shots down at Custom Golf Works on a QC Quad launch monitor, we can confirm that this driver is both fast, powerful and low spinning.
Comparing it to other models from the same category that have been or are set to be launched in 2024, the Cobra Darkspeed X was the longest of the lot, second fastest and also produced the second lowest spin rate.
We also discovered during testing that the Darkspeed X is one of the lowest launching drivers of 2024. This meant that our ball flight was very piercing, leading to a good amount of rollout after landing.
All in all, this driver is a rocket. If you are looking to gain distance off the tee, this driver is certainly worth your consideration.
In terms of forgiveness, this driver ranked middle of the pack for 2024. Ball speeds were retained very well across the face, but in terms of accuracy, there were a few horror strikes that were punished appropriately.
While there are always going to be bad shots that will miss the target, there are competitors in 2024 that did do a better job of keeping the ball straight from heel or tow strikes.
All in all, the Darkspeed X driver is a fantastic product and one that certainly excels in distance and speed. While it may not be the most forgiving, it certainly makes up for it with serious firepower.
Should you buy the Cobra Darkspeed X?
If you desire blistering speed, distance and unrivalled looks, then you should definitely consider getting fitted for a Cobra Darkspeed X this year.
Not only is it in ours the best-looking driver of 2024, but it packs some serious heat under the hood and will certainly add yards to your tee shots.
If forgiveness is number one on your priority list, then perhaps there are better-suited drivers on the market; however, if you want to experience superior speed, then we would highly recommend giving the X a hit in 2024.
It's also worth mentioning that coming in at £469, this driver is also considerably cheaper than some of its direct competitors, making it one of the best value premium drivers on the market.
