Key Features
- Speed Channel - engineered trench behind the face helps to minimise face thickness and increase flex
- Hollow Cavity Design - long and mid-irons (4-8) feature a dual cavity design with a hollow lower half section that delivers a lower and deeper centre of gravity for ease of launch; scoring irons (9-SW) feature a perimeter undercut for improved forgiveness and accuracy.
Looks
The larger oversized profile and thicker topline will give game improvers and senior players a real confidence boost at address. Tester's comment: "Does not seem quite as busy as the Fly-Z at the back."
Feel
Nice sounding iron but not as soft as others. Senior golfers will appreciate the sound dampening medallion that should also ensure Fly-Z XL reduces those tremors from off-centre hits. Standard shaft did not suit all testers. All testers favoured the comfortable Lamkin grip. Tester's comment: "I sensed lots of weight in the head which was ideal."
Performance
Despite the slightly higher loft for a six iron, the majority of testers were striking the ball further than Fly-Z. That had much to do with better ball striking and ease of launch - the dual hollow cavity design provides the deep, low centre of gravity for a high trajectory. Tester's comment: "Easy to get airborne and sling to the left, but not the most forgiving."
Verdict
Superb value for money at £399 and the ideal game-improvement iron for someone in the high teens or above the age of 50. Very easy to pop up in the air and packs a punch in terms of distance.
