Dustin Johnson says he expects LIV Golf to continue despite merger news!
Dustin Johnson added his insight on the merger ahead of the US Open.
Dustin Johnson says he expects LIV Golf to continue for at least another season despite the recent news of a merger between the PGA Tour, DP World Tour, and the Public Investment Fund of Saudi Arabia (PIF) which funds LIV Golf.
Last Tuesday, the PGA Tour, DP World Tour and the PIF announced they would be coming together to form an entirely new, for-profit entity.
This turned the golf world upside down as for much of the past year, the PGA Tour and DP World Tour were involved in lawsuits with LIV Golf.
However, much is still unknown about what this new entity and the agreement between these three parties means for the future of men's professional golf.
This week, the best players are all in California for the 123rd US Open at the Los Angeles Country Club.
Dustin Johnson, who currently plays on LIV Golf after an impressive career on the PGA Tour, spoke to Sky Sports ahead of the major on what he knows about the merger and the future of LIV.
"As far as I know, LIV will go into 2024 and they're doing the schedule now," Johnson told Sky Sports. "That's the plan but I can't answer really any further than that.
Johnson said that the information came from PIF governor Yasir Al-Rumayyan, who will also serve as board chairman on this new entity.
PGA Tour commissioner Jay Monahan will be CEO.
Johnson also spoke to Golf Channel about his thoughts on the current situation.
"I just hope we can get all the best players playing at the same time at golf tournaments," he said. "Obviously it's a little split right now, but PGA Tour has great events and LIV has great events and to get everybody playing together would be fun and exciting."
Johnson won 24 times during his career on the PGA Tour, including the 2020 Masters Tournament and the 2016 US Open.
Since joining LIV Golf, he's won two tournaments and finished first on the season-long individual points race in the inaugural 2022 LIV season.
He also captains the 4 Aces GC, who won the LIV team championship in 2022. They're currently leading the team standings for 2023, as well.
Johnson will tee off Thursday for the first round of this year's US Open alongside the PGA Tour's Keith Mitchell and Sam Burns.
