US Open Second Round: LIVE leaderboard and updates from Pinehurst No.2

Welcome to live golf scores, updates and commentary from the second round of the 2024 US Open at Pinehurst No.2.

Tiger Woods missed the cut and then said that 'may or may not be his last US Open' on day two at Pinehurst No.2 in North Carolina.

LIVE: US OPEN THIRD ROUND

Perhaps Woods' comment was just in frustration, we'll have to wait and see whether he decides to peg it up at Oakmont in 12 months time.

Woods, 48, slumped to a lacklustre 3-over 73 to miss the cut by two shots on 7-over par.

The 15-time major champion has played in just four tournaments this season, with his results now reading: WD-60-MC-MC.

At the top of the board, Ludvig Aberg (69) leads the way on 5-under par.

Patrick Cantlay (71), Bryson DeChambeau (69) and Thomas Detry (67) are locked just one shot back on 4-under par.

Rory McIlroy slipped back but still very much remains in the hunt to land a fifth career major title and first in nearly 10 years.

McIlroy, who last tasted major victory at the 2014 PGA, carded a lacklustre 2-over 72 to fall to 3-under par alongside Tony Finau (69) and Matthieu Pavon (70).

Former Masters champion Hideki Matsuyama (66) is a further shot back on 2-under par.

US Open Second Round Leaderboard
Ludvig Aberg-5
Bryson DeChambeau-4
Thomas Detry-4
Patrick Cantlay-4
Rory McIlroy-3
Tony Finau-3
Matthieu Pavon-3
Hideki Matsuyama-2

Elsewhere, PGA champion Xander Schauffele carded a solid 69 to move himself into the red on 1-under par alongside Tyrrell Hatton (71), Tom Kim (68), Akshay Bhatia (71), Tim Widing (68) and Corey Conners (70).

It was a day to forget for runaway World No.1 Scottie Scheffler, who posted a rare 4-over 74 to fall back to 5-over par.

But the runaway World No.1 narrowly made the cut.

He will be looking to take advantage of fresh greens and make his move up the board early on Saturday.

Birdies for Schauffele, McIlroy

McIlroy -4 (12*), Schauffele -3 (12*)

It's a first birdie of the day for McIlroy, and an incredible fifth for Schauffele.

Both players took dead aim at the pin on the par-4 3rd after blistering drives, and they converted their birdie putts from six feet.

McIlroy drained his putt from behind the hole, while Schauffele converted his from under it.

Scheffler missed his birdie putt from 12 feet as his frustrations continue on day two.

The World No.1 looks on way back in the pack at +3.

He needs to be careful he doesn't miss the cut here.

15:41
Birdie for Schauffele

Schauffele -2 (11*)

The US PGA champ is rolling!

After a tough bogey-bogey start, Schauffele has rolled in a fourth birdie of the day from 20 feet at the par-4 2nd.

Schauffele is now within three of the lead and moving serenely onto the first page of the leaderboard.

McIlroy (-3) and Scheffler (+3) both make pars.

15:33
Hole in one for Straka

Straka +2 (9)

It's an ace for Sepp Straka on 9!

The Austrian sends his iron into the heart of the green and the ball trundles into the middle of the cup.

15:26
Dart from Bryson

DeChambeau -3 (8)

After a fantastic par save on the previous hole, DeChambeau sends a brilliant iron shot down the flag on par-3 8th and it leads to a second birdie of the day to bring him back to level on the round.

The 2020 US Open champ is back to within two shots of the lead.

15:13
Schauffele makes his move

Schauffele -1 (9*)

Here comes the X-Man.

Schauffele stiffs his approach shot on the 18th and it's the simplest of birdies for the US PGA champ.

He now moves to under par for the championship.

14:53
McIlroy switches off completely! Disaster? Absolutely not

McIlroy -3, Schauffele E, Scheffler +2 (7*)

Oh my word.

Rory McIlroy finds the heart of the green at the par-3 17th.

But then disaster strikes as he misjudges his 40-footer down the hill and he's off the green!

No problem, though, as he chips in coming back up the hill for one hell of a par.

14:46
McIlroy gets the job done nicely

McIlroy -3, Schauffele E, Scheffler +2 (7*)

McIlroy leaves himself with work to do at the 16th after missing the green left.

His TP5x settles on an uphill lie and he elects to chip from 36 feet away.

It's a good effort as well and he looks comfortable over the four-footer back up the hill for par.

14:41
Hatton joins DeChambeau!

Hatton -3 (7)

Great stuff from the Englishman who makes his second birdie of the day at the par-4 seventh hole.

There's not too many players better with a wedge in their hand than Tyrrell.

From 107 yards, he takes dead aim and leaves himself six feet for birdie.

Can he find the centre of the cup? Absolutely.

14:39
DeChambeau birdie

DeChambeau -3 (6)

Bryson loved this putt as soon as it left the putter face.

The American gets a huge roar from the Pinehurst crowd as he jars one from 25 feet to move back to three-under.

14:34
Another Kaymer birdie

Kaymer -2 (4*)

The 2014 champ is just three shots off the lead now, thanks his second birdie of the day.

His latest birdie was from 11 feet.

'Why are you trying to be that aggressive?'

Homa +1 (5*)

Max Homa opts to get aggressive with this lie on the par-5 fifth.

And it did not go well.

14:22
Scheffler getting irritated

Scheffler +2, Schauffele E, McIlroy -3

Dropped shots for McIlroy and Scheffler at the par-3 15th.

Scheffler finds the green with his tee shot but it rolls back off the green.

His chip runs on and on and on and, eventually settles some 20 feet from the cup.

His par attempt was superb but was always low and just grazes the cup.

Scheffler throws his club straight up in the air in frustration.

McIlroy also can't save par after hitting his tee shot in the same spot as Scheffler.

Hmmm.

14:12
Schauffele back to level

McIlroy -4, Schauffele E, Scheffler +1 (5)

All three players have the flag surrounded at the 14th but it's only Schauffele that takes advantage.

The PGA Championship winner converts from six feet.

McIlroy misses from 11 feet and Scheffler can't find the cup from a similar distance to X-Man.

14:04
Stones from DeChambeau

DeChambeau -2, Homa +1, Hovland +7 (4)

Dechambeau was wayward off the tee and found a fortunate lie in the waste area.

His approach needed a tad more juice and it would've stayed on the green.

Instead, he's left with a tricky up and down to a front pin.

His chip rolls past the cup and he leaves himself a treacherous downhill put.

DeChambeau barely touches it and it finds the dead centre.

Xander grabs a birdie

McIlroy -4, Schauffele +1, Scheffler +1 (3)

Beautiful birdie from Schauffele at the 13th.

The American set up a short birdie putt with a glorious shot from the sand.

His playing partners settle for pars.

McIlroy found the heart of the green again and misses low, but taps in from a foot.

Scheffler, on the other hand, had to two-putt from 50 feet.

His birdie putt kept on rolling and eventually settles eight feet away.

Can he knock it in? Of course he can. He's the world number one and he isn't going anywhere.

13:53
How's this for bad luck?

Straka +3 (3)

Sepp Straka is super accurate with his approach at the third hole.

So accurate, in fact, that his golf ball clatters the flagstick and his ball tumbles all the way across the green into the native area.

Eventually, he knocks it in for a triple bogey.

Oof.

13:39
'Patience is the key'

McIlroy -4, Schauffele +2, Scheffler +1 (3)

McIlroy knocks his approach pin high and his putt had the speed, only the direction was way off.

Still, it's an easy par for the Ulsterman.

Schauffele also manages to save his par after missing the green.

Scheffler misses his 14 footer for birdie, but taps in for his third consecutive par.

13:36
What a start from Martin Kaymer

Kaymer -1 (1)

Kaymer started on the back nine and the former champion has started beautifully, knocking in a 21 foot putt for birdie.

The German, Tyrrell Hatton and Sergio Garcia are LIV Golf's best performers thus far.

13:29
Fleetwood bounces back

Fleetwood E (3)

Tommy bogeys the second hole but it didn't take him long to respond.

He finds the heart of the green at the third and rolls in a 12-footer for birdie.

Meanewhile Rory McIlroy nukes another drive straight down the middle of the fairway.

Boy, he is driving it lovely this week, isn't he?

13:21
First bogey of the US Open for Rory McIlroy

McIlroy -4, Scheffler +1, Schauffele +2 (2)

Schauffele misses his par putt to drop another stroke.

McIlroy's greenside chip was good, but he can't save a four and makes his first bogey of the 2024 US Open.

He was in the middle of the fairway after his tee shot and only needed to flick a wedge into the centre of the green!

Dammit, Rors.

13:19
First bogey for DeChambeau

DeChambeau -2 (2)

After a safe start, DeChambeau makes a bogey at the second hole.

His approach was long and left and he left himself 20 feet to save par.

It misses the cup left.

13:14
Checking in with Bobby Mac

MacIntyre E (2)

The Scot is going well so far at this US Open.

He strokes in a lovely 12-footer to save par at the second.

He'd love to comfortably make the cut so he can enjoy watching Scotland play Germany tonight in the Euros.

13:12
Disappointing approach from McIlroy

McIlroy -5, Schauffele +1, Scheffler +1 (1)

Schauffele finds the wiry rough off the tee and after a long discussion with his caddie Austin he elects to try and chop an 8-iron towards the green.

His golf ball barely gets out and he's got work to do to save his par.

Meanwhile McIlroy is in the middle of the fairway but misses left and his golf ball dribbles into the first cut in between the two greenside bunkers.

13:03
Positive start from McIlroy and Scheffler, Schauffele makes a bogey

McIlroy -5, Scheffler +1, Schauffele +1

Schauffele finds trouble off the first tee and sends his approach long of the green.

He fails to get up and down and drops to one-over for the championship.

No drama for McIlroy or Scheffler.

The Northern Irishman fails to convert from 11 feet from his birdie.

Scheffler's birdie putt was from a similar distance.

12:59
Fast start from Hovland

Hovland +7, Homa +1, DeChambeau -3

Fast start from the Norwegian, who attacks the first pin and leaves himself a matter of inches for the easiest of birdies.

He'll need a few birdies today if he is to make the cut.

Meanwhile, Homa and DeChambeau start with pars.
