US Open Second Round: LIVE leaderboard and updates from Pinehurst No.2

Welcome to live golf scores, updates and commentary from the second round of the 2024 US Open at Pinehurst No.2.

Tiger Woods missed the cut and then said that 'may or may not be his last US Open' on day two at Pinehurst No.2 in North Carolina.

LIVE: US OPEN THIRD ROUND

Perhaps Woods' comment was just in frustration, we'll have to wait and see whether he decides to peg it up at Oakmont in 12 months time.

Woods, 48, slumped to a lacklustre 3-over 73 to miss the cut by two shots on 7-over par.

The 15-time major champion has played in just four tournaments this season, with his results now reading: WD-60-MC-MC.

At the top of the board, Ludvig Aberg (69) leads the way on 5-under par.

Patrick Cantlay (71), Bryson DeChambeau (69) and Thomas Detry (67) are locked just one shot back on 4-under par.

Rory McIlroy slipped back but still very much remains in the hunt to land a fifth career major title and first in nearly 10 years.

McIlroy, who last tasted major victory at the 2014 PGA, carded a lacklustre 2-over 72 to fall to 3-under par alongside Tony Finau (69) and Matthieu Pavon (70).

Former Masters champion Hideki Matsuyama (66) is a further shot back on 2-under par.

US Open Second Round Leaderboard
Ludvig Aberg-5
Bryson DeChambeau-4
Thomas Detry-4
Patrick Cantlay-4
Rory McIlroy-3
Tony Finau-3
Matthieu Pavon-3
Hideki Matsuyama-2

Elsewhere, PGA champion Xander Schauffele carded a solid 69 to move himself into the red on 1-under par alongside Tyrrell Hatton (71), Tom Kim (68), Akshay Bhatia (71), Tim Widing (68) and Corey Conners (70).

It was a day to forget for runaway World No.1 Scottie Scheffler, who posted a rare 4-over 74 to fall back to 5-over par.

But the runaway World No.1 narrowly made the cut.

He will be looking to take advantage of fresh greens and make his move up the board early on Saturday.

18:26
Tiger Woods underway

Fitzpatrick +3, Woods +4, Zalatoris +5

Big cat is underway.

And he finds the fairway at the first with a long iron.

Woods and Zalatoris both miss the green with their approaches.

Big cat just needed a little bit extra on that.

18:15
Detry takes the solo lead

Detry -6 (14*)

What a shot that is by Detry.

The Belgian finds the green at the par-5 fifth in two strikes and he sets up an easy two-putt birdie to take the outright lead on six-under.

18:08
DeChambeau closes with a birdie

DeChambeau -4, Hovland +6, Homa +6 (F)

A closing birdie sees DeChambeau post a second round of 69.

The American certainly had his work cut out at times today, but he kept the big scores off his card.

Hovland also finishes with a birdie to finish on six-over.

Homa makes par.

It's unlikely Homa and Hovland will make the weekend, but you never know.

17:59
Scheffler has to sit and wait

Scheffler +5, McIlroy -3, Schauffele -1 (F)

McIlroy's tee shot at the par-3 ninth was poor and he was in a world of trouble.

His golf ball was plugged in the front trap.

The Northern Irishman does well to give himself a chance of par, but he misses and settles for bogey.

That means he cards a second round of two-over 72.

Scheffler also took dead aim needing a birdie but also finds the trap.

He gets up and down from the sand to post a 74.

Scheffler will now have to sit and wait to see if that's good enough.

Welcome to the real world, Scottie.

Schauffele closes with a par to return a card of 69.

17:52
Hovland will have the weekend off

DeChambeau -3, Homa +6, Hovland +7 (17)

Hovland has tried so hard today but his hopes of making the weekend are over now.

At the par-3 17th, Hovland leaves himself 16 foot to save par.

He starts his putt out left and it stays there.

Hovland will settle for bogey and an early exit from the 2024 US Open.

17:48
Scheffler misses again

McIlroy -4, Schauffele -1, Scheffler +5 (17*)

McIlroy misreads his birdie putt but the speed is fine and he makes his par.

This time Scheffler manages to get the pace with his birdie putt but the direction is off line.

He makes his par.

One to go...

17:38
Hovland saves bogey

DeChambeau -3, Homa +6, Hovland +6 (16)

Hovland was in a world of trouble at the 16th and left himself with a 17-footer up the hill to save bogey.

Somehow, he makes it.

A double bogey would've surely ended his hopes of making the weekend.

DeChambeau's birdie putt stops short and he makes his par.

Homa stays at six-over after making a tester for his par.

17:34

Matsuyama is cooking

Matsuyama -2 (14*)

The former Masters champion is quietly putting together a superb round.

Matsuyama hasn't made a bogey so far.

And he's birdied his last three holes to move to within three of the lead.

17:28
Scheffler still plugging away

McIlroy -4, Scheffler +5, Schauffele -1 (16*)

McIlroy can't believe his birdie putt on the seventh didn't move right at the end.

Still, it's an easy par.

Meanwhile Scheffler was faced with a long putt and he's off with the pace again.

He makes a four.

Will he get the birdie he so desperately needs?

17:22
Detry joins Cantlay at the summit

Detry -5 (12*)

The Belgian is on a roll.

Another birdie putt drops and he moves to five-under alongside Patrick Cantlay.

17:18
Dechambeau falls back to three-under

DeChambeau -3, Homa +6, Hovland +6 (15)

The trio are all unable to find the green at the par-3 15th.

DeChambeau and Homa find the trap and splash out respectively.

The LIV man hits the better shot but misses from six feet.

Homa can't hole a 20-footer and loses another stroke.

Meanwhile Hovland is fighting hard to make the cut.

And you have to give him an enormous amount of credit.

Hovland chips to gimme range.

He still needs a birdie, though.

17:14
Three pars for marquee group

McIlroy -4, Scheffler +5, Schauffele -1 (15*)

Scheffler and Schauffele swiftly put the nightmare that was the 15th hole behind them.

Everyone makes a par at the tough par-3.

Scheffler desperately needs a birdie.

17:10
Thomas Detry is flying

Detry -4 (11)

The Belgian moves to four-under with his fourth birdie of the day at the first (his 10th).

He's now within one of the lead.

17:07
It's all going wrong for Fleetwood

Hatton -1, Fleetwood +5 (15)

Hatton makes a safe par at the 15th but Fleetwood three-jabs.

He's in danger of missing the cut now.

Fleetwood hasn't missed the cut in a major since the 2022 US Open at Brookline, which was won by his European Ryder Cup teammate Matthew Fitzpatrick.

17:03
Big finish needed for the world number one

Scheffler +5 (14*)

Right, the world number one needs a huge finish.

Will he make the cut?

16:53
Doubles for Scheffler and Schauffele

McIlroy -4, Schauffele -1, Scheffler +5 (14*)

It's a total disaster for both Schauffele and Scheffler as they make a complete mess of things down in the waste area left of the green.

It leads to doubles for both.

McIlroy also found trouble left of the green but he recovered for a par.

Scheffler is now in serious danger of missing the cut.

16:43
Detry to -4

Detry -4 (10*)

Belgian Detry is making a huge push up the board today.

He sends a stunning iron shot down the pin on the 1st and he taps home to move into T2.

16:42
Hatton makes another bogey

Hatton -1 (14)

It's back-to-back bogeys for Hatton.

He fails to convert his par putt from nine feet on the par-4 14th

16:37
Another bomb from Bryson!

DeChambeau -4 (13)

DeChambeau buries a second consecutive birdie from long range, this time coming from 25 feet at the par-4 13th.

It moves the LIV Golf star into T2 and just one shot behind Cantlay, who has yet to tee off.

Brilliant stuff from Bryson.

16:31
Pendrith surging up the board

Pendrith -3 (10*)

Canadian Pendrith is putting together one of the rounds of the day.

He taps home from short range on the par-4 1st to move it to -4 for the day and to -3 for the tournament.

16:23
Brilliant birdie for Bryson

DeChambeau -3 (12)

A huge birdie putt for DeChambeau lands on the 12th.

The big-hitting American moves back up to -3.

16:20
Brutal break for Hatton

It was most certainly unlucky 13 for Hatton.

What could have been an eagle turned into a bogey.

The Englishman clattered the back of the pin with his approach shot into the par 4 and his ball spun back into the greenside bunker.

He splashed out to six feet but failed to convert the par save.

A brutal break for Hatton, who moves back to -2.

Playing partner and fellow Englishman Fleetwood is down in the pack at +4.
