Hatton -2 (68), Fleetwood E (70)
Superb start to the major by the English duo.
Hatton -2 (68), Fleetwood E (70)
Superb start to the major by the English duo.
DeChambeau -3, Hovland +8, Homa E
How can Bryson respond to his first bogey of the day?
Well, he splits the fairway at the eighth then hits another towering iron shot into the green.
His golf ball settles some 14 feet from the pin.
Can he make it?
No!
One to go for the American.
McIlroy -5, Schauffele E, Scheffler +1
McIlroy drains a bomb at the final hole after Scheffler and Schauffele make safe pars.
Scheffler wasn't himself and neither was Schauffele.
McIlroy has played superbly today and matches Patrick Cantlay on five-under.
It's the hope that kills you...
DeChambeau -3, Homa E, Hovland +8 (16)
All three players in this group have putts to save par.
Hovland goes first and misses, but Homa makes his confidently.
DeChambeau also misses from inside 10 feet.
The American opted to go with an iron off the tee and then sent his approach long of the green.
McIlroy -4, Schauffele E, Scheffler +1 (17)
That's how you respond to a bogey if you're the world number one.
Finally, he gets a cheer as a birdie putt drops.
McIlroy left his birdie putt in the jaws and Schauffele manages another safe par.
One to go for this group.
Spieth +1 (15)
It's been a battling day for the former champion.
Spieth has managed two bogeys and one birdie thus far on an otherwise clean card.
DeChambeau -4, Hovland +7, Homa E (15)
DeChambeau has a bounce in his step as he salvages par at the sixth.
Meanwhile Hovland's day has gone from bad to worse...
McIlroy -4, Schauffele E, Scheffler +2 (16)
Lovely stuff from Rors, finding a birdie at the 16th from 11 feet.
Meanwhile, Scheffler can't save his par from the same distance.
But Schauffele holds his nerve after a bit of tree trouble.
X-Man missed the fairway left then clattered a tree with his second. He got lucky and his ball ended up in the middle of the fairway.
Kaymer -2 (13)
Martin Kaymer is keeping a clean card and he's just found his second birdie of the day.
DeChambeau -4, Homa E, Hovland +6 (14)
What fun it has been to watch DeChambeau in the majors this year.
His tee shot at the 14th was pretty bad by his standards.
From a sandy lie, he managed to find the putting surface to set up an eagle putt from 50 feet.
His effort wasn't too shabby but it's a gimme four.
Meanwhile, Hovland misses a six-footer for his birdie.
Scheffler +1, McIlroy -3, Schauffele E (15)
The world number one misses another fairway.
This time, his golf ball goes straight towards the spectators down the left side of the 16th fairway.
Looks like he's getting a drop here.
What a massive break.
Fleetwood E (14)
The Englishman has a glorious eagle opportunity from inside 25 feet at the fifth.
Can he make it? No! It slides by.
But it's the easiest of birdies and he's back to level.
Four more to play for Fleetwood.
Clark +3 (13)
We haven't talked much about Wyndham Clark this afternoon.
And that's because there's not a lot you can say about the American so far.
He's scrambling his way around Pinehurst and has only hit four of 11 fairways.
Clark bogeys the 12th and sends his drive at the next way, way left.
DeChambeau -3, Homa +1, Hovland +6 (13)
Bryson tees up a golden opportunity at the 13th with another superb iron shot from 199 yards that leaves him with just inside 14 feet for a birdie three.
He just misses!
Still, pars are good at US Opens.
Scheffler +1 (13)
Scheffler is not at the races off the tee today.
The world number one loses another drive right and he has his head in his hands.
Work to do to save par at the 14th.
DeChambeau -3 (12)
Bryson joins Rory McIlroy on three-under after holing a 10-footer on the third green.
Six to play for the Crushers captain.
Hatton -1 (12)
Tyrrell Hatton hits a glorious approach into the third hole.
His towering iron shot lands pin high but then trundles ever so slowly off the green into the sand.
His playing partner Tommy Fleetwood also found the trap.
Hovland +6, DeChambeau -2, Homa E (11)
Just when you thought Hovland had steadied the ship he makes another mistake.
He makes a complete hash of the second hole and is lucky to walk off with a bogey after carrying the green with his approach and then sending his next off the putting surface.
DeChambeau and Homa make their pars.
McIlroy -3, Schauffele E, Scheffler (11)
McIlroy sends his drive miles left but finds a cracking lie in the waste area at the 11th.
He sends a towering iron shot into the green and leaves himself with a 20-footer but the right-to-lefter slides by.
Schauffele battles his way to a four and Scheffler is nowhere near with his birdie putt.
Kaymer -1 (7)
The German claimed the US Open here in 2014.
Remarkably, he hasn't won since then.
But the LIV golfer has picked up a birdie at the seventh to move into the red for the week.
McIlroy's putting has been superb today.
Hovland +5 (10)
Hovland had a shocking start here and was five-over after playing only eight holes.
He bounced back with a birdie at the 18th (his ninth).
At the first, he has 17 feet for birdie but his effort comes up a matter of inches short.
McIlroy -3, Schauffele E, Scheffler +1 (10)
The Northern Irishman splits the fairway at the par-5 10th then nukes his approach just short of the green.
His eagle attempt comes up about five feet short but he converts the birdie to move within two shots of the lead.
Scheffler can't get up-and-down from the front edge and misses a 12-footer for birdie.
Schauffele lags his eagle putt pin high from 28 feet and taps in for his four.
DeChambeau -2 (9)
Bryson tugs his drive left on the 18th into the waste area.
From there, he leaves himself a tricky up and down from 52 feet.
Not that it matters, as the LIV man holes out for a three.
This man is box office, isn't he?
Fleetwood E (9)
The Englishman has started his opening round well.
One bogey and one birdie alongside seven pars sees the European Ryder Cup star turn in level par.
