US Open First Round: LIVE golf scores, Patrick Cantlay leads, Tiger Woods struggles

Welcome to live golf scores, updates and commentary from the first round of the 2024 US Open at Pinehurst No.2.

PGA Tour star Patrick Cantlay surged to the top of the leaderboard on day one at the 2024 US Open

Cantlay, 32, carded six birdies with just one bogey for a superb opening round of 5-under 65.

The World No.9 has incredibly not won on the PGA Tour for 22 months, and he has only notched two top-10 finishes all season.

But despite the indifferent run of recent form, he put all of that to one side to hit the front in the morning wave at a brutally difficult Pinehurst No.2.

Many consider Cantlay one of the best players without a major to his name, and after watching his best mate Xander Schauffele pick up his maiden major at the US PGA last month, you have to feel it's given the 2021 FedEx Cup champion added motivation to get the job done this week.

Cantlay is making his 30th major appearance this week. He has only made four top-10 finishes in his major career so far.

Sweden's Ludvig Aberg is also off to a hot start following a 4-under 66 on his US Open debut.

The 24-year-old is making just his third major start and he only turned pro some 12 months ago.

Matthieu Pavon and Tony Finau are also off to solid starts.

LIV Golf's Sergio Garcia, who made it into the US Open at the last minute as a first alternate, took full advantage by being the only player in the morning wave of groups to post a round without a bogey.

Garcia posted a solid 1-under 69 to move into early contention for a second career major title.

LIV Golf's Brooks Koepka hit the top of the board in the early stages of the first round but he stumbled on the back nine for a level-par 70.

That score was matched by his playing partner Collin Morikawa, who finished with back-to-back birdies on 17 and 18.

Elsewhere, Tiger Woods slumped to a 4-over 74.

Woods birdied his first hole at the par-5 10th but it was all downhill from there.

The three-time US Open champion made six bogeys on the round and just two birdies to fall well down the field on day one.

World No.1 and two-time Masters champion Scottie Scheffler, US PGA champion Xander Schauffele and four-time major champion Rory McIlroy are on the course.

Scheffler is going in search of a second major title of the season and a sixth victory in his last nine starts.

A stress free front nine for Rory McIlroy

McIlroy -2, Schauffele +1, Scheffler +1 (9)

It's been a very impressive front nine from McIlroy, and he finishes it off with a very easy par on the 9th hole.

His birdie putt appeared to roll right over the front edge without dropping, and it looked like it also tumbled over a marker on its way.

McIlroy doesn't seem phased, though, as he has a chuckle while retrieving his ball from the bottom of the cup.

Scheffler also made his par, while Schauffele managed to drop in a birdie putt to move back to one-over.

Classic Tyrrell Hatton

Hatton -2 (8*)

Tyrrell Hatton absolutely hated his tee shot on the par-three 17th, kicking his clubs along the ground in disgust.

When he got to the green, he realised he had about seven feet for birdie, which he had no issue dropping in the cup.

A wry smile did creep across the Englishman's face as he walked off the green.

20:42
Bogey time for Hovland and Homa

Homa +1, Hovland +6 (7*)

Another hole passes, and Hovland drops another shot. This time, he's joined by Homa. The duo both leave lengthy putts well short, resulting in a pair of three putts.

These greens are really starting to cause the field some serious issues.

How many long putts have we seen completely misjudged today?

20:36
Bounce back birdie for Scheffler as Schauffele stalls

Scheffler +1 , Schauffele +2 (7)

Scheffler gets some repair work done to his scorecard with a good birdie on the 7th hole, but Schauffele's issues continue as he misses a five-footer that leads to his third bogey in the last four holes.

Meanwhile, McIlroy holes a nervy five-footer for par to maintain momentum.

It's been a rollercoaster ride for this blockbuster group so far.

20:12
Scheffler's struggles continue

Scheffler +2 (6)

It's been a strange start from the world No.1, and he's not been his typical flawless self.

Having found the green on the par-three sixth, a sloppy three-putt means he's now two-over for the day.

Both McIlroy and Schauffele managed to get up and down to escape the sixth unscathed.

Hovland in free fall

Hovland +5 (5*)

Viktor Hovland's caddie might need to throw the towel in soon.

He's made his second double bogey of the day and looks in real trouble. Back-to-back bunker shots were the issue this time.

As a self confessed Viktor Hovland fan, this is painful to watch.

19:54
Schauffele drops a shot

Schauffele +1 (5)

Xander couldn't quite replicate the heroics of his playing partner, and having sprayed it all over the par-five fifth, he eventually had to settle for a bogey, which moves him over par for the first time today.

19:49
McIlroy Magic

McIlroy -2 (5)

It wasn't looking good for McIlroy off the tee, but he produced a moment of magic on the par-five fifth with a beautiful chip in birdie to move to two-under.

That's the McIlroy we know and love.

19:43
DeChambeau moves under par

DeChambeau -1 (4+)

The big-hitting LIV Golf star moves under par for the first time with a birdie at the par-four 13th.

After a bombed drive, all that was needed was some touch with a wedge and DeChambeau duly delivered, leaving himself with a knock in birdie.

19:30
Another dropped shot for Hovland

Hovland +3 (3*)

Viktor Hovland is having a torrid time out there today. Another bogey means he's now three over in his first three holes.

He will need some magic pretty soon to get his round back on track.

His playing partners on the other hand are going along nicely. Homa sits a one-under, while DeChambeau is level par.

McIlroy moves under par

McIlroy -1 (4)

After a steady start, McIlroy moves under par for the first time with a well-judged approach on the fourth that was backed up by a solid seven-foot putt.

He's looked very comfortable so far.

19:10
Double trouble for Hovland

Hovland +2 (2*)

It's been a hole to forget for Viktor Hovland on the 11th.

Some wayward work found him in the native area, and after deciding to take a drop, he hit a pretty heavy-handed chip to the back of the green.

The best he could do from there was muster a two-putt, which means he's marked down a dreaded double bogey on his card.

18:47
Schauffele early birdie

Schauffele -1 (2)

It's a brilliant start for World No.2 Schauffele as he sends a mid iron into five feet on the par-4 2nd and he buries the putt in the heart.

Solid start for the US PGA champ.

McIlroy and Scheffler both made pars to remain level.

Three-jab bogey finish for Finau

Finau -2 (F)

Putting has been a nemesis for much of Tony Finau's career and sadly it was back to haunt him again on the par-3 9th, his final hole of the round.

Finau three-jabs from 40 feet, missing a par putt from around six feet, but it all adds to a solid 2-under 68.

The six-time PGA Tour winner, like Aberg and Cantlay above him on the board, is going in search of his maiden major title.

18:15
Aberg birdies his final hole

Aberg -4 (F)

Aberg hits a superb iron shot down the flag on the par-3 9th, his final hole of the round, and he converts the six footer to move into solo second and one shot behind Cantlay.

The Swede is making his US Open debut this week, and just his third career major start.

What a talent, all the age of 24.

18:06
Cantlay posts a brilliant 65

Cantlay -5 (F)

It's a fantastic round of 5-under 65 in the books for Patrick Cantlay, who posts the lowest round in the clubhouse so far in the first round of the 2024 US Open.

He leads by two from Ludvig Aberg (17*), Tony Finau (17*) and Matthieu Pavon (16).

17:55
Cantlay catching fire!

Cantlay -5 (17*)

Patrick Cantlay is lighting it up on day one of the US Open with a sixth birdie of the roun

The 2021 FedEx Cup champion fires a beautiful iron shot down the heart of the flag at the 8th, his penultimate hole of the day, and he converts the short four-footer for birdie.

It moves Cantlay into the outright lead on 5-under par.

Matthieu Pavon has just bogeyed the 16th and it means Cantlay now leads by two.

Cantlay is considered by many as one of the best players in the world without a major to his name.

Morikawa holes out from sand

Morikawa +1 (17)

It's been a tough day for Morikawa on the par-3s today with two doubles, but he made amends on the par-3 17th by holing out for birdie from the sand.

The birdie moves two-time major champion Morikawa back to 1-over par.

17:32
Bogey for Aberg

Aberg -3 (15*)

Aberg came up short of the green on the par-3 6th and then again with his second shot.

He chipped up to 10 feet and then drilled the clutch bogey putt.

Still a very solid round for the Swede, who is making his US Open debut this week in just his third career major start.

17:22
Cantlay hits the front

Cantlay -4 (15*)

Cantlay drains a 20-footer for birdie on the par-3 6th, his 15th hole of the day, to move into a share of the lead with Aberg and Pavon.

Aberg joins Pavon in front

Aberg -4 (14*)

The European Ryder Cup hero gets up and down for birdie on the par-5 5th to move into a share of the lead with Pavon on -4.

Aberg is playing in just his third major.

Trouble for Koepka

Koepka -2 (14*)

The five-time major champ misses left at the par-3 15th.

That's not ideal, considering the pin is tucked at the back left of the green.

He elects to putt from off the green and gives himself a chance of a par.
