Bryson DeChambeau to Scottie Scheffler before US Open: "Dude, what are you doing?"
Bryson DeChambeau has revealed he implored Scottie Scheffler to spill the beans on why he is playing so well before the 2024 US Open at Pinehurst.
Bryson DeChambeau says he tried to get Scottie Scheffler to reveal his secret to exceptional golf ahead of the 2024 U.S. Open.
DeChambeau joined reporters for a news conference on Tuesday morning to discuss his chances this week.
The American, 30, has thrilled the golf world with his performances at the majors this year.
He exhilarated at the 2024 Masters by firing an opening 65 at Augusta National but his challenge faded after he was undone by a disaster at the 15th hole during the third round.
DeChambeau responded from that disappointment with a box office performance at Valhalla a month later, forcing Xander Schauffele to sink a birdie putt on the 72nd hole to claim the PGA Championship.
Unsurprisingly, world number one Scheffler is the overwhelming favourite to triumph this week at Pinehurst No.2.
DeChambeau said he bumped into Scheffler at the beginning of the week and implored the American to spill the beans.
"I tried asking him that a couple days ago when we flew in here," DeChambeau told reporters when asked why Scheffler has been playing so well.
"I saw him, and I was like, 'Dude, you're playing unbelievable, what are you doing, man?'
"He's like, 'I'm just playing good golf, I don't know. It's one of those things.'"
DeChambeau continued: "From my perspective, he's got full control of his golf swing.
"He's figured out a lot of his putting. He plays some incredibly strategic golf from what I can tell.
"He doesn't go too crazy. He just hits the right shots at the right time.
"He's really in control of the environment, not only his environment but the conditions on the golf course. He knows what the golf ball is going to do.
"He knows how to react accordingly. When things don't go right, he's able to right the ship pretty quickly.
"That's just a recipe for success, and he's been able to do it longer than anyone has for a long time.
"Again, he is the gold standard right now, and we're all looking up to him going, all right, how do we get to that level?"
DeChambeau will be playing the first two rounds of the major alongside Viktor Hovland and Max Homa.
Meanwhile, Scheffler has been handed a mouth-watering group with Rory McIlroy and the aforementioned Schauffele.
Career grand slam aspirations
Whatever happens this week for DeChambeau, the golfer said his performance at Valhalla gave him the confidence that he 'can do it again' and win another major.
He even contended that he believes he can win the career grand slam.
"That's my ultimate goal for myself," he said.
"I gave it all I had [at Valhalla]," he said. "I let it all out there.
"I feel really confident with my game in under-pressure situations, which is great.
"That's what I took out of Valhalla. That was a lot of fun."
