Tommy Fleetwood reveals how he handles 'the look' over 23-year age gap with wife
England's Tommy Fleetwood has revealed he 'always gets the look' when he tells people he has three children aged 17, 16 and six.
Tommy Fleetwood has revealed how he handles 'the look' after people work out there is a considerable age gap between him and his wife.
Fleetwood married Clare Craig in 2017 and she is 23 years his senior.
The Englishman has approached the topic before, saying in 2023 that the couple 'definitely get comments' but it's never ever been an issue.
"She's incredibly cool and I'm not cool at all, though I am quite mature for my age," Fleetwood previously said of Clare, who now acts as his full-time manager.
Ahead of the 2024 US Open, Fleetwood joined Barstool Sports' Fore Play to discuss a number of topics.
He revealed his caddie Ian Finnis is on the mend after having open-heart surgery, how cool it was to have Augusta National caddie Gary Moore on the bag at the 2024 Masters and just how much he loves his family.
Fleetwood and Clare have one son, named Frankie, and the golfer is also step-father to Oscar and Mo.
Oscar is an incredibly talented player and had Fleetwood as caddie during his debut on the Challenge Tour earlier in the year.
He was asked if his relationship with Oscar and Mo is akin to an uncle.
"No, I think the whole family -- we're unbelievably close," Fleetwood told the podcast.
"So, there's Oscar and Mo and they are the two older ones and then there's Frankie obviously.
"And, you know, honestly, it's funny because whenever anybody asks, so people that don't know you they'll always say, 'Do you have kids?'
"And, pretty much all the time I'll say yeah, 'I have three kids' and they'll go, 'How old are they?'
"And I'll say 17, 16 and six. And then you get the look.
"So then, I'm like, well I'm not that old, so then I'll have to explain that the first two are step-kids.
"Which, honestly, I don't really, I never really think of them as step kids.
"I've been around them a long time now.
"Particularly, Mo, I think I've been a, I guess, a parental figure to Mo since he was five."
Fleetwood added: "I'm unbelievably lucky with the relationship that we have. We're so close.
"When the five of us are together that's always our safe space and I hope we always keep that.
"And I said to him [Oscar] when he got into the event [on the Challenge Tour] I said, I'll ask you now but I'm never going to feel bad if you don't want me to [caddie] because I understand that it will bring, I'm pretty sure that it will bring probably a little bit more exposure and a little bit more pressure to you if I'm there.
"And he said I don't care I want you to do it. So that was cool and yeah, again, moments that you can't buy are like him making the cut on the last hole."
Fleetwood said he believes Oscar has 'the tools' to make it as professional.
Oscar is going to take a gap year before deciding whether to move to the United States for college and pursue a career in the game, he said.
Fleetwood comes into the 2024 US Open as somewhat of a dark horse.
He is yet to win on the PGA Tour but has been impressive in the majors over the last few years.
His 2024 Masters performance saw him record his best ever finish with a tie for third.
Fleetwood followed that up with a top-30 finish at the PGA Championship at Valhalla.
