Rory McIlroy likely to take note of Jordan Spieth's Masters comments

Jordan Spieth has explained why he believes the annual Masters Tournament at Augusta National is 'technically the easiest major to win'.

Jordan Spieth says the hype around Rory McIlroy at the annual Masters Tournament always gets blown 'a little out of proportion'.

Spieth has given a candid interview to GOLF ahead of the first men's major of the year.

Despite being the owner of one green jacket, the 31-year-old American said Augusta National 'visually' messes him him.

Spieth is playing this week's Valspar Championship and will also play the Valero Texas Open before heading to Georgia.

Once again, there will be a huge amount of chatter over whether the aforementioned McIlroy can complete the career grand slam.

McIlroy, 35, is in good form having recently added a second Players title to his resume but it's evident that scar tissue remains.

Spieth told GOLF that Augusta is 'just blown up more than it probably should be'.

He added: "In that sense, it gets blown up towards Rory.

"Majors are majors. Augusta's โ€” you know, if you look at the field, it's technically the easiest major to win, so the more I think someone focuses on that, the better."

What confuses Spieth is that he has contended at Augusta despite not feeling as though he was in the best of form.

McIlroy is in stellar form and will tee it up at The Masters having already won twice on the PGA Tour in 2025.

The 35-year-old won the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am in February and saw off J.J. Spaun in a playoff at TPC Sawgrass.

"I've contended there when I've had next to nothing, and there's no real reason for that," Spieth said.

"It's not like I love that place or not. If I didn't have anything, your driving accuracy is less of a problem there than it is at other majors, except maybe the Open

"But other than that, I think it was just because the field wasn't the same as some of the other harder events. But thatโ€™s a hot take.

"You know, it's the biggest tournament in the world, it has the most eyeballs for golf, so I think everything โ€” no matter what the story is โ€” gets a little blown out of proportion."

Spieth put forward the idea that McIlroy should have probably clipped at least three or four major wins since 2014 given the size of the fields.

The 2025 Masters field has not been finalised yet but it is likely to have approximately 95 competitors.
