The Masters LIVE: Rory McIlroy wins The Masters in playoff to capture career grand slam

The Masters 2025: Rory McIlroy defeats Justin Rose in a playoff to become the sixth player in the modern era to capture the career grand slam.

Rory McIlroy has won The Masters to become the sixth player in the modern era to capture the career grand slam.

McIlroy, 35, defeated his European Ryder Cup teammate Justin Rose, 44, with a birdie on the first extra hole at famed Augusta National.

The World No.2 surged into a four-shot lead with eight holes to play but he threw that away with a bogey on 11 and double on 13.

Another bogey followed at 14, and incredibly McIlroy had fallen one shot behind Rose at the time.

In a ding-dong battle with the Englishman over the closing holes, McIlroy nosed ahead with birdies on 15 and 17.

But McIlroy then squandered a one-shot lead down the 72nd hole with a bogey and it saw him enter a playoff with Rose.

Both players found the short grass down the first extra hole, the par-4 18th.

Rose stuck his approach shot from 154 yards to 15 feet, but McIlroy took dead aim and stuffed his wedge into four feet.

After Rose missed on the low side, McIlroy stepped in and tucked away the birdie putt to achieve golf immortality.

McIlroy was immediately reduced to tears as he fell to his knees on Georgia's hallowed turf.

He was then hugged by his caddie and best mate Harry Diamond, before being greeted by his wife Erica and daughter Poppy for hugs and kisses.

McIlroy now joins golf legends Gene Sarazen, Ben Hogan, Gary Player, Jack Nicklaus and Tiger Woods in completing the career grand slam.

The victory marks Mcilroy's fifth career major title and his first since the 2014 U.S. PGA.

It's also McIlroy's third win of the 2025 season.

McIlroy takes home a record first prize of $4.2m for winning the 2025 Masters.

Playoff is underway...

We're underway in the playoff and headed back down the par-4 18th.

Rose steps up first and finds the left side of the fairway.

McIlroy then smashes his ball past Rose in the short grass.

Both players in good shape but you would have to favour McIlroy marginally given he has a shorter approach shot into the green.

RORY TAKES THE LEAD!

McIlroy -12 (17)

The patrons scream chants of 'Rory!' as McIlroy tucks away his three-footer for birdie on the 17th.

McIlroy just needs to par the 18th for a place in the record books.

Come on Rory, this is your moment...

23:27
WHAT A SHOT FROM RORY!

OUT OF THIS WORLD RORY!!

McIlroy hits a hard 8-iron into the par-4 17th and he stuffs his approach shot next to the pin.

Rory has left himself a couple of feet for birdie, one that would take him into a one-shot lead up 18.

Best Masters ever?

It's hard to think of a better one at this very moment in time...

23:24
REED HOLES OUT ON 17

Reed -9 (17)

Reed has just holed his approach shot for eagle on the 17th.

He will now need to do it again up 18 to join Rose at 11-under par.

23:16
McIlroy par, Aberg bogey

McIlroy -11 (16), Aberg -9 (17)

McIlroy fails to convert his 10-footer for birdie on 16.

Aberg three-putts from 35 feet for bogey on 17.

That's Aberg out of it now.

23:15
ROSE BIRDIE AT 18 - TIES THE LEAD!

Rose -11 (F)

Rose drills home a 20-footer for birdie on the 18th.

The Englishman has now set the clubhouse target of 11-under and is now tied for the lead with McIlroy.

Rose's round of 66 incredibly included 10 birdies - what a day from the 44-year-old Englishman.

23:13
Brilliant from Rory at 16

The pin might be in a different position on 16 for this year's final round but it matters little for McIlroy, who has just played a pearler into 10 feet right of the hole.

That's one of the closest shots we've seen at 16 all day - and what a time to produce it with a one-shot lead.

A birdie here for Rory would likely seal it.

23:09
Rory misses the eagle putt but taps in for birdie

McIlroy -11 (15)

Rory misses his five-footer for eagle but he taps in for birdie to take the lead on 11-under par.

Three holes separate himself from a career grand slam.

Can he do it?

Hold on tight, let's see...

23:05
WHAT A SHOT RORY MCILROY!

WORLD CLASS FROM RORY AND POSSIBLY THE GREATEST SHOT OF HIS LIFE!

McIlroy just hit a stunning draw around the trees to five feet for eagle on the par-5 15th.

And breathe...

22:55
BOGEY FOR ROSE! THREE-WAY TIE FOR THE LEAD!

Rose -10 (17)

It's getting nervy out here folks!

Rose misses a seven-footer for par on the 17th.

We now have a three-way tie for the lead - Rose, McIlroy and Aberg.

22:53
Aberg one back

Aberg -10 (15)

Aberg has just birdied the par-5 15th.

The Swede is now just one behind.

It looks a three-man race for The Masters.

22:52
McIlroy bogey, Rose leads The Masters

McIlroy -10 (14)

The wheels are coming off for Rory, this is quite incredible.

McIlroy came up shy with his approach shot and then failed to get up and down for par.

The bogey moves McIlroy to 10-under par and he's now one shot behind Rose.

22:39
RORY DOUBLE, ROSE BIRDIE - TIED AT THE TOP!

McIlroy -11 (13)

Absolutely shocking from Rory.

From nowhere, he's just made his fourth double of the week.

McIlroy is now 11-under par and incredibly tied for the lead with Rose, who has just birdied the 16th.

Just incredible.
