The Masters LIVE: Rory McIlroy wins The Masters in playoff to capture career grand slam

The Masters 2025: Rory McIlroy defeats Justin Rose in a playoff to become the sixth player in the modern era to capture the career grand slam.

Rory McIlroy has won The Masters to become the sixth player in the modern era to capture the career grand slam.

McIlroy, 35, defeated his European Ryder Cup teammate Justin Rose, 44, with a birdie on the first extra hole at famed Augusta National.

The World No.2 surged into a four-shot lead with eight holes to play but he threw that away with a bogey on 11 and double on 13.

Another bogey followed at 14, and incredibly McIlroy had fallen one shot behind Rose at the time.

In a ding-dong battle with the Englishman over the closing holes, McIlroy nosed ahead with birdies on 15 and 17.

But McIlroy then squandered a one-shot lead down the 72nd hole with a bogey and it saw him enter a playoff with Rose.

Both players found the short grass down the first extra hole, the par-4 18th.

Rose stuck his approach shot from 154 yards to 15 feet, but McIlroy took dead aim and stuffed his wedge into four feet.

After Rose missed on the low side, McIlroy stepped in and tucked away the birdie putt to achieve golf immortality.

McIlroy was immediately reduced to tears as he fell to his knees on Georgia's hallowed turf.

He was then hugged by his caddie and best mate Harry Diamond, before being greeted by his wife Erica and daughter Poppy for hugs and kisses.

McIlroy now joins golf legends Gene Sarazen, Ben Hogan, Gary Player, Jack Nicklaus and Tiger Woods in completing the career grand slam.

The victory marks Mcilroy's fifth career major title and his first since the 2014 U.S. PGA.

It's also McIlroy's third win of the 2025 season.

McIlroy takes home a record first prize of $4.2m for winning the 2025 Masters.

RORY IN RAE'S CREEK

McIlroy has incredibly just plonked his third shot into Rae's Creek on the par-5 13th.

A huge mistake from the leader.

Reed shocker

Reed -7 (13)

LIV Golf's Reed has just had a shocker from a few feet.

It looked for all the world he was going to make birdie to move to 9-under par, but he incredibly three-jabbed from nowhere to make a bogey.

Reed is back to 7-under and out of it now.

Rose birdie, into solo second

Rose -10 (15)

Rose bins his birdie putt from close range to move into solo second on 10-under par.

He's just three back of McIlroy, but the leader has just found the fairway with a 3-wood down the par-5 12th.

22:23
Bryson's head has gone

McIlroy -13, DeChambeau -6 (12)

After a double at 11, DeChambeau has well and truly taken himself out of The Masters by making a bogey on 12.

McIlroy played safe into the heart of the green and two-putted for par.

This is smooth-sailing for McIlroy now, who is just six holes away from becoming the sixth player in the modern era to complete golf's career grand slam.

McIlroy bogey, DeChambeau double

McIlroy -13, DeChambeau -7

Trouble for the final pairing.

McIlroy just came up shy of the water with his approach shot but still went on to make a bogey.

It drops him back to 13-under par, but that's now four shots clear as Rose has just made a bogey up on the 14th.

DeChambeau's tournament looks to be over now.

He flung his approach shot left into the water and it all adds up to a double bogey.

It sends DeChambeau back into the chasing pack on 7-under par.

RORY MCILROY LEADS BY FOUR

McIlroy -14 , DeChambeau -9 (10)

The 10th hole marked the beginning of McIlroy's epic collapse in 2011.

But he gets redemption today and slots in the birdie to move FOUR strokes in front.

DeChambeau does well to save his par.

I can't spake.

21:53
Rose easy birdie

Rose -10 (13)

Wow. Rose finds the green in two strokes at the 13th and has a great look at eagle.

He barely touches his putt and it trickles ever so slowly towards the cup. Surely it drops.

NO!

Still, an easy birdie for Rose - his third in a row - sees the Englishman vault into solo second...

21:51
Rory drops his club!

McIlroy -12, DeChambeau -9 (10*)

Bryson is first to go from the fairway and his approach just about holds the green. He's got an uphill putt from around 20 feet or so.

Rors drops his club immediately after striking his approach. Where did that go?

Right next to the hole...

21:45
Confident start to the second nine for Rory

McIlroy -12, DeChambeau -9 (10*)

Right. Rory McIlroy is nine holes away from completing the career grand slam.

Can he finally find the fairway? Yes.

DeChambeau follows the Northern Irishman with a terrific tee shot of his own...

21:41
The lead is four

McIlroy -13, DeChambeau -9 (9)

Talk about a roller coaster of emotions.

McIlroy knocks his birdie putt in and moves to 13-under.

Can DeChambeau answer? NO!

The lead is FOUR!

21:39
McIlroy and Bryson knock it close

McIlroy -12, DeChambeau -9 (9*)

Tremendous approaches from leader McIlroy and DeChambeau.

Both have excellent chances to put circles on their scorecards at the 9th...

21:38
Rose has company!

Aberg -9 (10)

Birdies everywhere! Ludvig moves into a share for second with Justin Rose after making a delightful birdie at the 10th.

Aberg found the fairway and then knocked his approach to about 18 feet...

21:36
Back-to-back birdies for Justin!

Rose -9 (12)

Rose finds another birdie!

21:31
Here comes Rose

Rose -8 (11)

Justin lets out an audible groan after hitting his approach into the 11th. That back left pin is tricky to find, especially with water looming left.

The Englishman is some 50 feet from the cup but drains a huge putt to pick up an unlikely birdie.

21:30
Bryson shows heart

McIlroy -12, DeChambeau -9 (8)

Rory is somewhat tentative with his birdie putt. His golf ball trickles ever so slowly towards the hole. Safe par.

DeChambeau races his effort some four feet past but shows heart to salvage a par.

21:27
Day birdie

Day-7 (9)

Jason Day picks up another birdie and will head to the second nine still believing.

21:25
Aberg makes the turn

Aberg -8 (9)

Safe par at the 9th sees the Swede turn in 2-under.

He trails McIlroy by four.

21:24
Scheffler staus at -7

Scheffler -7 (10)

Scottie can't take advantage of an enormous drive at the 10th. He leaves his approach well short.

But he manages to escape with a par.

21:23
More pressure from the chasers

Conners -8 Reed -7 (8)

Reed and Conners take advantage of the 'easy' par-5 8th...

21:20
Safe shots from the final group

McIlroy -12, DeChambeau -9 (8*)

As expected, McIlroy and DeChambeau lay up after finding the trap with their tee shots.

Another poor tee shot from Rory McIlroy

McIlroy -12, DeChambeau -9 (8*)

Onto the par-5 8th for the final group.

Can McIlroy finally hit a good tee shot? Nope. Necky. Straight into the bunker.

Looks like Bryson is in the trap as well...

Sensational up and down from Bryson

McIlroy -12, DeChambeau -9 (7)

Oh my word. How has Rory left that short?

From the sand, Bryson musters an otherworldly up-and-down from a plugged lie.
