Cameron Smith reveals 'funny story' behind viral blazer at The Masters
Cameron Smith has revealed the 'funny story' why he decided to wear a navy blazer at the 2025 Masters at Augusta National.
Cameron Smith has come clean on why he decided to wear a suit to the 2025 Masters.
The 2022 Open champion went viral on Wednesday when he was spotted on the range wearing a navy Greyson blazer.
Smith explained why he decided to do so after hitting a 1-under 70 in the opening round of the first men's major of the year.
"Funny story," Smith told reporters. "I met Charlie [Shaefer], the Grayson guy, at [LIV Golf's] teams week.
"And we had a couple of beers – and maybe even a couple too many beers – and we got to talking about fashion.
"He said, 'It would be great if you wore a blazer at The Masters. I think it's the place to do it, and I agreed to it.' I'm a man of my word, so I did it."
Smith said that he was still able to swing pretty easily. "It was a bit chilly, so it kind of worked out," he said.
"It was pretty good[ wearing it]. I wouldn't say I'm a fashion guru by any standard, but I felt good in it."
Of course, Smith would prefer to wear a different colour jacked come Sunday evening.
He said that he was 'scrappy' with his irons in the first round and his driver felt 'alright'.
"Just couldn't quite see the shots out there and couldn't quite commit," he said.
"It was a really good scramble. I think I hit a couple of greens on the front nine and maybe three or four on the back.
"There was still plenty of good in there. The wedges felt great. The putter felt great. Even the driver felt great.
"Like I said, I was in some good spots and didn't really make the most of it. I haven't left myself too much work to do, so I can't be too unhappy."
"Putted like a blind man"
Cameron Smith is one of 12 LIV Golf recruits in the 2025 Masters field.
Patrick Reed, the 2018 green jacket winner, also carded the same score as Smith in round one.
But the American was not happy with his performance whatsoever and told reporters he was 'p--- poor' and 'putted like a blind man'.
Reed was frustrated, he said, because there was a 'really low' score out there.
