According to on-site meteorologist Stewart Williams, heavy rain began to fall early on Thursday morning.
By 8am ET, a total of two inches had fallen at Sedgefield Country Club.
Winds are currently also up at around 25mph, with gusts between 30 to 40mph.
All tournament facilities remain closed until further notice.
"This is a dangerous and life-threatening situation," wrote the National Weather Service in a mass push notification.
"Do not attempt to travel unless you are fleeing an area subject to flooding or under an evacuation order."
Providing the golf course is playable on Friday, tournament officials anticipate players will be able to commence their first rounds on Friday.
The next update is not schedule until 6pm ET.
While none of the biggest PGA Tour stars are in action this week, the event has still attracted some notable names including pre-tournament favourite Sungjae Im, Jordan Spieth, Shane Lowry, Cameron Young and Billy Horschel.
GolfMagic understands the PGA Tour plans to get the first round completed on Friday or at the very latest on Saturday morning.
The plan is to then get the second round done by the end of Saturday, allowing for a 36-hole finish on Sunday.
A Monday finish is also on the cards, although the PGA Tour would prefer to prevent that from happening with the start of the FedEx Cup Playoffs beginning at the FedEx St Jude Championship next week.
