Joe LaCava has revealed to GolfMagic that Tiger Woods was one of the first people to text him congratulations after his son Joe Jr earned his first victory as a caddie on the PGA Tour last Sunday.

LaCava Jr was on the bag for Joe Highsmith, who captured his maiden PGA Tour title at the Congizant Classic in The Palm Beaches.

Highsmith, 24, closed with consecutive rounds of 64 to surge through the field and seal a two-shot victory on 19-under par at PGA National in Florida.

The American now plans to continue saving money by living with his parents despite picking up the first-prize cheque for $1.6m

It marked a first win for the player-caddie relationship that only began last fall.

The victory was also a seriously proud moment for Joe Jr's father and long-time PGA Tour caddie Joe LaCava, a man who caddied 12 years for Woods.

LaCava was famously on Woods' bag when he won the 2019 Masters.

He now loops for Patrick Cantlay

"It was an incredible feeling for me," LaCava told GolfMagic while on the ground at this week's Arnold Palmer Invitational at famed Bay Hill.

"You know when he used to make twelve tackles back in high school I thought that was thrilling, but to watch that Sunday unfold like that, I mean, there is nothing like it. It's just an amazing, amazing feeling."

The veteran caddie was at home in his living room in Connecticut watching intently with his excitable wife Megan.

"She was leaping up out of the couch every two minutes screaming and yelling, and saying this is nothing compared to if you weren't at home. And I'm on the couch half asleep. I wasn't half asleep, I was just in my mode trying to low key it because I knew there was a lot of golf left."

But when the winning moment came to fruition, LaCava's phone blew up with texts from some of his former players including Woods and Fred Couples.

Woods has had Joe, Jr loop for his own son Charlie Woods in the PNC Championship in the past, and LaCava said his old boss was just as excited and thrilled as he was for Joe, Jr last Sunday.

"Typical Tiger he gave me the three-word text and he was very, very excited for Joe, Jr. because he likes him a lot. It was nice that he took the time to watch and see that he won," LaCava told GolfMagic.

"He said basically 'can you believe that?" There was probably a swear word in there but he was very excited for him."

LaCava continued: "Did I hear much from Fred? I heard a lot. He said he's got every shot in the bag, and he's been saying this for two years."

When Highsmith was crowned champion at the Cognizant Classic, LaCava Sr. and his wife Facetimed their son.

They also reminded their son to grab the flag on the 18th before the maintenance team did - a special memory and point of pride for young LaCava for the rest of his career.

It will no doubt be the first of many.

Joe LaCava was speaking to GolfMagic for the latest episode of the Beyond the Clubhouse podcast , which is released this weekend.

Joe LaCava III and Joe LaCava IV have been paired together for the opening two rounds of the Arnold Palmer Invitational.
