PGA Tour star Justin Thomas raging at himself after messing up chance for comeback win
PGA Tour star Justin Thomas was somewhat disappointed after he failed to capitalise on a 54-hole lead at the Hero World Challenge in the Bahamas.
PGA Tour star Justin Thomas says he's disappointed he failed to capitalise on a golden chance to end a two-year wait for a victory.
Thomas held the 54-hole lead at the Hero World Challenge in Albany but Scottie Scheffler proved his class with an emphatic final round of 63.
Two-time major champion Thomas made too many mistakes on Sunday, carding a 1-under 71 to finish seven adrift of Scheffler.
"It's just disappointing," Thomas told reporters after Scheffler posed for pictures alongside his wife Meredith, son Bennett and Tiger Woods.
"I would have liked to put a little more heat obviously on Scottie going in the back nine.
"You know, I felt like I got a couple bad breaks there on the par 3s, the wind completely died or switched on 5.
"But I mean, you know, obviously I can't expect to have good things happen when I'm leading by 1-over Scottie and only shooting 1-under on Sunday."
Even though the Hero World Challenge isn't an official PGA Tour event, a win would have represented a major comeback for the star who has struggled since winning the 2022 PGA Championship at Southern Hills.
He tested a driver with a longer shaft last week, and the results were evident:
Still, he reckons the result is a sign of things to come.
"I'm very excited," he said. "I feel very, very close, I just need to sharpen some things up.
"Just need to kind of get the scoring clubs a little bit sharper and better.
"I feel like my mid irons and iron game is close to where I want it, but if I can just get those wedges back where I feel like they should be and how they are for me, I feel like things will be good."
Asked what he was most proud of at the Hero, Thomas added: "Just being in contention again.
"I felt like I was pretty far from my best stuff all week, but I was managing everything well.
"I mean, I didn't do a good job of performing and just playing better today, but I mean, it's always fun to be in the final group of a tournament.
"If I keep doing it more often, it will happen eventually."
Thomas will now take a break until the 2025 season opener in Hawaii.
