PGA Tour commissioner's gesture at Q-School to golfer he suspended speaks volumes
PGA Tour commissioner Jay Monahan was spotted giving Alejandro Tosti a huge bear hug after the Argentine managed to earn his playing rights back at Q-School.
PGA Tour commissioner Jay Monahan was spotted hugging the hot-headed golfer Alejandro Tosti moments after the Argentine wrapped up his week at Q-School.
Tosti got off to a terrible start last week and was 5-over par after 36 holes at the Dye's Valley Course at TPC Sawgrass.
But the 28-year-old battled back over the weekend, firing gritty rounds of 65 and 66 to finish on 4-under and sneak inside the top five and ties to earn his Tour card for 2025.
Tosti played his rookie season on the North American circuit this year, but was forced to go to qualifying school after he finished 129th in the FedEx Cup.
He arrived on Tour with a reputation for being a bit of a hot-head.
In fact, he was suspended during his Korn Ferry Tour days after a pattern of inappropriate behaviour finally caught up to him.
According to MondayQInfo, Tosti was kicked out of the field after the first round of the Albertsons Boise Open in Idaho last August after an expletive-laden outburst on anger on the course.
The tirade followed multiple reported incidents of ill-tempered exchanges between Tosti, rules officials, his caddie and even his fellow competitors.
The details of the suspension Tosti served have not been made public because the Tour keeps such matters a closely guarded secret.
One of Tosti's biggest gripes is slow play.
In January this year, he was spotted sitting on one green during the Sony Open to demonstrate to his playing partners that they - or the field - were playing far too slowly:
Still, it appears that commissioner Monahan has a soft spot for Tosti, though.
He was pictured by Golfweek's Adam Schupak in a warm embrace after a tense finale on Sunday that included Tosti playing the final three holes in 1-under to sneak inside the top five players:
Speaking after the round, Tosti told reporters that he felt nerves throughout the whole of Q-School.
"Your heart is pounding at probably 180 beats per minute," he said. "Your mind is not in a clear state."
He said the challenge of is life is dealing with himself.
"But I was able to do it this week," he said. "[I] stayed patient and had a heck of a last two rounds. Now I'm going to be happy on my holidays."
Asked by one reporter why he still perseveres in golf, Tosti said: "I love the challenge.
"The challenge against myself knowing that you can always do better and there's like no limit.
"Even though you think you're good, there's always room to improve."
Lanto Griffin, Hayden Buckley, Takumi Kanaya, Will Chandler and Matthew Riedel were the other players who grabbed PGA Tour cards for 2025.
