Keith Mitchell holed out for a spectacular eagle on the par-4 18th to take a two-stroke lead into the final round of the Valspar Championship.

Mitchell, 32, carded the fourth-ever back-nine 29 in Valspar Championship history to post a round of 66 and move to 10-under par.

He became the first player in PGA Tour history to play the Snake Pit (holes 16-18) in 4-under par in one round.

After birdies on the tough par-4 16th and par-3 17th, Mitchell split the fairway and then holed out his approach shot into the par-4 18th.

Mitchell had fallen back into the chasing pack when going out in 1-over 37 but he bounced back by playing the last seven holes in 6-under par.

The American leads Mackenzie Hughes, Peter Malnati and Seamus Power by two strokes heading into the final round.

Cameron Young, Chandler Phillips and Brendon Todd are a further stroke back on 7-under par.

It was a day to forget for Justin Thomas, who carded a disastrous 8-over 79 to fall from 5-under par to 3-over par.

Thomas birdied the 1st hole but then made seven bogeys and a double-bogey to the house.

The two-time US PGA champion lost a whopping 7.034 strokes putting in the third round.
