Golf fans make Justin Thomas observation at The Sentry: 'When did this become a thing?!'

Golf fans baffled as to why Justin Thomas is carrying his water bottle in his back trouser pocket during the PGA Tour's first event of the season.

Golf fans have rushed onto social media to debate Justin Thomas' rather bizarre decision to place his water bottle in his back trouser pocket while he trudges around the course - instead of its more customary water bottle sleeve pocket in the golf bag.

The Athletic's Gabby Herzig first caught sight of Thomas, 31, carrying his water bottle in his back right trouser pocket during the first round of The Sentry at famed Kapalua in Hawaii on Thursday.

Thomas opened the first PGA Tour event of 2025 with a 2-under 71 to lie seven shots off the early pace set by U.S. compatriot Tom Hoge.

Herzig tweeted: "I’m convinced there is no water bottle that *won’t* fit in Justin Thomas’ pocket. When did this become a thing. I do not understand."

One golf fan then went further aided by some epic Photoshop skills:

Thomas has reportedly been carrying his water bottle in his back pocket for a number of rounds now.

Few golf fans understand why he's doing it though, especially when the latest Tour bags all have pockets on the side of the bag designed specifially for water bottles.

"This is what you do when you don’t have to pay for pants," joked one golf fan.

Another commented: "Keeps the glutes loose for immediate activation once he gets to the tee…"

"Don't get this at all," wrote one confused fan.

Thomas confirmed earlier this week that he will be going solo without a full-time golf instructor on the PGA Tour in 2025.

But Tiger Woods' former long-time golf coach Hank Haney has already questioned such a decision

Thomas remains winless around the world since etching his name on the Wanamaker Trophy for a second time in his career in May 2022.

The two-time US PGA champion and former World No.1 did finish the 2024 season strongly, however, with a T2 at the ZOZO Championship and solo third at Woods' Hero World Challenge in the Bahamas last month.

Thomas, who currently lies 19th in the world, was installed as one of the favourites at the start of this week's tournament on the PGA Tour.

Not only because of his impressive recent play but also the fact he's a two-time winner of The Sentry following wins in 2017 and 2020.

He will represent Atlanta Drive GC.
