Five-time PGA Tour winner suffers shock disqualification after playing wrong golf ball
Tour pro Ben Crane was DQ'd for a breach of Rule 6.3c(1) during the third round of the Corales Puntacana Championship on the PGA Tour.
Five-time PGA Tour winner Ben Crane was shockingly disqualified during the third round of the Corales Puntacana Championship.
Crane, 49, was competing in this week's co-sanctioned PGA Tour and Korn Ferry Tour event at Puntacana Resort & Club in the Dominican Republic.
The event is playing alongside the $20m RBC Heritage on the PGA Tour.
Crane was disqualified during Saturday's third round for a breach of Rule 6.3c(1) that occurred on the par-4 8th.
The American played a wrong ball on the 8th and he then failed to correct the error before making a stroke to begin the par-3 9th.
Crane was informed of his DQ after making bogey on the par-3 11th.
He was 4-over par for the round at the time and well out of contention for the tournament.
Crane made the cut after carding rounds of 69 and 71.

Crane is a five-time PGA Tour winner.
He won his first title at the 2003 BellSouth Classic.
Crane then added the 2005 U.S. Bank Championship in Milwaukee.
He had to wait another five years for his third PGA Tour title, and it was arguably his biggest at the 2010 Farmers Insurance Open.
The American then won the 2011 McGladrey Classic before claiming his last PGA Tour event at the 2014 FedEx St Jude Classic.
He is arguably best remember for his appearance in the 'Golf Boys' band, which also comprised Bubba Watson, Rickie Fowler and Hunter Mahan.
Forgotten about that?
We've got you covered:
Crane never played his way into a U.S. Ryder Cup or Presidents Cup team, but he did reach as high as 30th in the Official World Golf Rankings.
No longer with a full PGA Tour card in his hand, Crane is ranked 1,664th in the world.
