Recent PGA Tour winner Brian Campbell has revealed he got a voicemail from commissioner Jay Monahan after he claimed his breakthrough victory in Mexico.

Campbell edged out South Africa's Aldrich Potgieter over extra holes in late February to earn his first ever title on the North American circuit.

The 32-year-old American also drew one of the luckiest breaks imaginable after both players made par on the first playoff hole.

Campbell watched his tee shot at the par-5 18th sail towards the out of bounds posts before his golf ball struck a bamboo tree and bounced back into play.

From there, he was able to get himself back into position and he subsequently rolled in a birdie putt from four feet to snatch the win after Potgieter missed.

"I'm jokingly saying that I need to grow some bamboo in my back yard as soon as I can because I've got to pay homage to that for sure," Campbell told GolfMagic

After celebrating on the green with his caddie Cooper and girlfriend Kelsi, the golfer returned to the spot where he drew a favourable break to toast the tree that saved him.

Pictures of the moment from the PGA Tour's social media team quickly went viral.

"That was fun for them to bring us out there to do that afterwards," Campbell said.

He added: "I think what's funny for me is I was locked in for four days.

"My mind was so on the shots that I needed to hit from hole to hole and for it to come down to one shot is a shame, but also - heck - I'll take it.

"Lucky bounces you've got to capitalise on. I was able to put myself back in position and put the pressure back on Aldrich, and make a birdie and close it out.

"So I'm proud of myself but also very happy and pleased that it bounced off the tree."

Campbell's phone was buzzing with messages and voicemails in the immediate aftermath of victory.

He said when he checked his phone that evening there were 590 text messages waiting for him to go through.

The majority of them were from his Fantasy Football chat.

"Shout out to them," Campbell said.

There was also a voicemail from PGA Tour commissioner Jay Monahan.

"It was really nice of him to do that," the golfer said of Monahan, who has drawn heavy criticism in recent years owing to his handling of the LIV Golf saga.

"And I think my win really gives me loads of confidence in what I’m doing and a lot of belief and trust in my game that even when bad days come, I can still come through."

Campbell was speaking to GolfMagic as part of a collaboration with Beyond the Clubhouse.

You can listen to the full interview with Campbell when it is released next week.
