Cameron Smith took control on Friday afternoon as he raced to 13-under par.
The Australian broke the 36 hole scoring record for a St Andrews Open.
Smith held a two shot lead as the field was trimmed to 70 players.
Tiger Woods was reduced to tears as he played possibly his last Open here, missing the cut at +9.
Rory McIlroy looks to continue another fine week in a major.
Also in contention include Viktor Hovland, Dustin Johnson, Scottie Scheffler and Cameron Young.
Saturday storylines
McIlroy tells his approach into 7 to "sit".
And it does, and he's got an outside look at birdie.
Nope!
His birdie putt just swerves at the last minute.
What about Hovland? Nope, he misses his birdie putt high and right and leaves more than he'd like coming back.
He checks the break with his feet and gently brushes the right-to-left putt into the dead centre and thanks the crowd.

We just told you about Smith's approach into the 6th hole.
His golf ball actually ends up in and okay-ish spot but it's not easy.
But in fairness, it never is around here.
He puts a delightful chip a few feet left of the pin and has absolutely no trouble holing the par putt. That was an awesome up and down.
Cameron Young just misses with his birdie putt.
Smith -12, Young -12 (6)
Johnson and Scheffler both have good looks for birdie at No. 7.
But both of their putts run out of juice and finish low and left.

Meanwhile, Cam Smith carves his approach way, way left at 6 and has to warn the group on the 12th green to watch out...

He's made bogey at the 1 and then finds four straight pars.

He just loves The Open, doesn't he?
He moves to -4 for the day after making back-to-back birdies at 12 and 13.
You can't help but he just needs a bit more, though?!
The guys at the top don't look like they are going to be making too many mistakes, especially with the conditions.

McIlroy and Hovland smoke their drives on the 5th hole.
It's a par-5 and they both have a crack with their second shots and find the putting surface.
It's excellent golf, in all honesty.
Both have decent looks at eagle. McIlroy's putt goes by the cup just a tad and he has no worries tidying up his birdie to open his account for the day.
Hovland is a little bit shy but has a stress free birdie to take the lead all on his own.

Scottie Scheffler is just short of the 5th green and gives his pitch the respect that it needs.
Once it gets onto the putting surface it's just so quick.
He leaves himself a mid-range putt for birdie and finds the centre of the cup.
Lovely putt that.
His playing partner DJ makes do with a par.
Scheffler -10, Johnson -10 (5)
The pin at 15 is just super tough isn't it?
And it claims Shane Lowry as one if its victims.
Lowry is over the back off the green has to try and navigate a tricky slope.
It's slow, then quick...
And he leaves it far too short and misses the par putt.

That's 3 birdies in 4 holes for Cantlay.
He has just a few feet to tidy up for his birdie at No. 6.

Nothing is happening for Smith yet.
He has to make do with a par at 3. Likewise, Cameron Young.

What a putt this was. Up and over the undulating green.
That putt was from some 40ft! He's just holed a 35-footer from OFF the green.
This is a bonkers start by the Norwegian!!
Meanwhile, Rory McIlroy is tentative with his putt and will settle for a par.

Not a great putt for DJ that one as his par putt lips out!
Scheffler makes do with a par.

Tommy will be a long way back tomorrow but that is a superb round of 66 by the Englishman.
Fleetwood loved that birdie at 18 to reach -9.
Not much more to be said about that hole.
Young is miles away but lags it well and will record a par.
Smith is much closer and looks like he's rediscovered his touch that deserted him on 1.
But it's a par for the Aussie.

The Norwegian has NEVER had a top-10 in a major. That is bonkers. This chap is just so good at golf.
McIlroy has a great look for birdie too, but that thing was always right!

Patrick Cantlay and Talor Gooch pick up birdies at the third hole.
Gooch is a LIV Golf player and had some interesting comments about what it's like playing this week.

Rory can't really go at the flag with his second shot at 2.
He's got approximately 50-odd feet to navigate.
And it was tracking well, but in the end his golf ball stops just a few feet short and he tidies up for par.
Viktor Hovland has a better look at making up a stroke but fails to convert.

Fleetwood is -8 overall, -5 for the day and he's just tidied up a nervy par putt at 17.
If he makes a birdie down 18, a really low well tomorrow will make the leaders think...

That's an easy par putt for Cameron Smith. He's made them look easy all week but he's made a right hash of that and he drops one straight out of the gate.
