No! We don't want the rain.
We want fast greens. We want carnage.
No! We don't want the rain.
We want fast greens. We want carnage.
We told you how bad Hovland's approach into 13 was...
He two putts from 114 (!) feet to save par.
McIlroy? He had a decent look for birdie but it's just a tad high.
No problem, though. He tidies up from a couple of feet.
McIlroy -15, Hovland -15 (13)
The wait on the tee was well worth the wait for Young.
He drives the green but misjudges his eagle attempt. It's so dry and burnt next to the hole and his ball races by.
No problem though, as he rolls it in from 10 feet.
Solo second for Young.
Par for Smith at 12.
Smith -13, Young -14 (12)
Hovland has a great look for birdie at 5.
The only problem is he's playing the 13th hole.
Hovland deliberately hits his tee shot left up onto the hill to try and get a better look into the green but his second shot explodes on him and he fires it way, way left and the ball goes towards the 5th pin at pace.
McIlroy is in no trouble with his tee shot and manages to give himself another birdie look.
Could be a big swing here.
McIlroy -15, Hovland -15 (12)
It's getting chilly out there now.
McIlroy slightly mishits his tee shot at the drivable par-4 12th and leaves himself an awkward distance in.
He's got nothing on from that position, in all honesty.
McIlroy sends his chip over the flag and has about 30 feet for birdie.
It's a good, aggressive putt but it just misses. That would have been loud.
Par will do.
Hovland hits his tee shot left and gives himself a great look at birdie with his approach.
But no! Just left.
McIlroy -15, Hovland -15 (12)
Scheffler had bunker problems at 12 as two groups bunch up on the tee behind.
He leaves himself 22 feet for par but misses.
DJ has a sniff at birdie but can't convert.
Johnson -12, Scheffler -11 (12)
McIlroy and Hovland are waiting on the 12th tee.
And they will be joined by Smith and Young.
They're waiting for Scheffler and Johnson to get off the green.
Hurry up boys!
Xander was a big favourite heading into this week after winning the Scottish Open.
He's not in the mix though.
He posts a third round of level par 72.
However, he has just eagled 18 from the Valley of Sin with a 48 foot putt.
Still, at -5 his race is run.
Two birdies in a row for Young at 9 and 10.
He drains a birdie putt from 11 feet to get within two.
No joy for Smith, his birdie putt drifts by the right edge.
But he saves par.
Smith -13, Young -13 (10)
Poor, poor tee shots from Hovland and McIlroy at the par-3 11th hole.
Hovland two-putts from 55 feet.
McIlroy? He came up and out of his tee shot and sprayed it right and has 32 yards to the pin.
But he holes the 10 foot putt to save par.
That was a big question posed to the pair. And they both answered.
Heading for home now...
McIlroy -15, Hovland -15 (11)
Spieth makes a strong move today but the quality ahead of him on the leaderboard may just be too much tomorrow.
He taps in for birdie at 18 after navigating a lovely eagle putt out of the Valley of Sin close to the hole.
He's a -8 for the championship.
Smith gets it back to level par for the day with a birdie at the 9th.
Young matches the birdie.
Smith -13, Young -12 (9)
Hovland -15 (10)
McIlroy -15 (10)
Smith -13 (9)
Scheffler -12 (11)
Johnson -12 (11)
Young -12 (9)
Cantlay -10 (12)
Fleetwood -9 (66)
Kim -9 (13)
Gooch -9 (11)
Fitzpatrick -8 (13)
Kisner -7 (65)

Oh my word. Goodness me Rory McIlroy what have you just done, my boy!
He pipes his drive at 10 straight into the bunker protecting the front right of the green.
And he's okay. The lie is good. He takes his time over his second, waiting for DJ to hit his tee shot.
And would you believe it. Straight in! An eagle 2! Boom!
What a shot. What a moment. There are huge chants of "Rory! Rory! Rory!"
Hovland can't match him with the 2, but he finds the birdie with a 14 foot putt...
I need a lie down.
McIlroy -15, Hovland -15 (10)
Scheffler puts his tee shot at the 10th to just short of the green then pitches to 5 feet and finds the birdie.
DJ is a bit further back with his tee shot but his approach is about 1 foot or so better than Scheffler's.
He knocks it in and then swaggers over to the 11th tee.
Don't you just love that DJ walk?
Johnson -12, Scheffler -11 (10)
Hovland and McIlroy both drive the 9th green.
McIlroy nestles his eagle putt from 66 feet fairly close. It looks like 5 feet.
Can he make it? You bet he can. Boom.
That's a bogey-free 33 to the turn for the Northern Irishman.
He walks over to the 10th tee to huge cheers.
Hovland can't pick up a stroke, which will feel like a bogey on this hole.
McIlroy -13, Hovland -14 (9)
Hovland goes left off the tee at the par-3 8th hole.
He's got about 30ish yards to the pin and stuffs his pitch to 4 feet.
Par saved.
McIlroy also gets down in two after leaving himself 53 feet for his birdie.
Time to get out the drivers for the 9th, boys...
McIlroy -12, Hovland -14 (8)
The 9th hole is playing particularly easy this week.
It's only 352 yards which for these fellas means one thing.
Chief.
DJ drives the green and gives himself 23 feet for eagle...
Nope! Just misses. Easy birdie though.
Scheffler departs with a par but that will feel like a bogey.
Johnson -11, Scheffler -10 (9)
I'm not sure I've seen Cameron Smith putt this badly before.
Nothing is going his way today.
He almost collapses in frustration and disbelief as his birdie attempt dribbles by.
Young was in a world of pain off the tee and found the bunker.
He couldn't save his par from 38 feet...
Smith -12, Young -11 (7)
Matthew Fitzpatrick is chugging along nicely today.
He's just found his third birdie in a row!
That takes the U.S. Open champion into a tie for 10th.
His birdie putt at the par-3 11th was all of 30 feet!
Excellent stuff.
Fitzpatrick -8 (11)
DJ and Scheffler just don't look like they have got the hang of the greens today.
At 8, DJ saves par from 8 feet.
Scheffler can't find a birdie, either.
Johnson -10, Scheffler -10 (8)
Been a tough day for Tyrrell Hatton thus far.
He's +1 for the day and has reportedly complained to a tournament referee that it's just a little bit too slow.
Hatton's par putt at 8 drifts by the cup and he's muttering to himself again.
He does have a point about pace of play, though, doesn't he?
Hatton -7, Gooch -7 (8)
Shane Lowry was slowly moving himself into contention at this Open.
But it's gone wrong on the back 9 for the 2019 winner.
After making back-to-back eagles at 9 and 10, he's dropped shots at 12, 15 and 17.
Still, he's found a closing birdie at 18 for a 69.
That sees him at -7 going into Sunday.
