A number of golf fans on X were disgusted after Lucas Herbert's caddie was struck in the head with a bottle of water at LIV Golf Adelaide.

Home favourite Herbert was putting for a closing birdie in the second round on the 'water hole' at The Grange Golf Club.

The Australian, 28, drained the six-footer which prompted the perhaps well-lubricated fans to celebrate wildly by tossing plastic cups and bottles of water onto the green.

Herbert welcomed the adulation and held his arms out as if to say: 'Are you not entertained?'

His caddie Nick Pugh also got in on the celebrations, giving his player a high-five.

But as he went to put the flagstick back, he was struck by a missile that was thrown from the crowd as Herbert turned to shake hands with his playing partners.

It appeared as though the guilty party lobbed a full bottle of water.

@flushingit captured the moment and re-shared the clip on the platform X, which prompted an almost unanimous reaction of outrage.

"This is not cool," one wrote.

Antother added: "This is a disgrace and there is no place for it in golf at all."

This user wrote: "It's okay... they are growing the game globally."

LIV Golf played their inaugural event in Australia last year and it was one of the breakaway tour's huge success stories from their second campaign.

Just this week LIV's financial backers, the PIF of Saudi Arabia, struck a deal to fund Golf Australia's junior program.

It represented the first formal relationship between Australian golf's governing body and the entity.

This is not the first time we have seen unsavoury scenes in men's professional golf in 2024.

Earlier in the year, the organisers of the PGA Tour's Waste Management Phoenix Open at TPC Scottsdale came under heavy criticism for allowing fans to drink in excess.

One woman fell from the grandstand at the iconic 16th hole.

And in another video clip a gentleman was filmed perched on a barstool, asleep, urinating on himself.

There is little doubt LIV were inspired by the WM Phoenix Open.

But this will likely not go down too well.
